Community College Men's Basketball Semifinals
Kingsborough Wave 98, Bronx Broncos 69
Paced by eight three-pointers and a game-high 31 points from guard Chad Jones, defending champion Kingsborough knocked off Bronx 98-69 in the CUNY Athletic Conference / Con Edison Tournament semifinal at BMCC.
Jones nailed seven of his threes in the opening 20 minutes as the Wave never looked back. Imbert Prosper added 24 points and 10 boards as KCC shot 53% from the floor.
After trailing early, KCC (14-9) went into full court man to man pressure to try to wear down the undermanned Bronx squad. This succeeded in gaining KCC a 10 point lead at the half.
In the second half, KCC continued its pressure and with superior rebounding opened up an 18 point lead at the 13:00 minute mark. The Broncos (1-18) made a valiant effort, but could not contain the surging Wave and succumbed in the end. Bronx was led by Shabron Bridges with 27 with Gamba Thompson adding 24.
BMCC Panthers 92, Queensborough Tigers 90
Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers survived a huge comeback by Queensborough in the final 10 minutes to win 92-90 in the second semifinal of the CUNY / Con Edison Basketball Tournament held at BMCC.
After trailing by as much as 62-40 midway through the second stanza, the Tigers stormed back to close within six at 75-69 thanks to some sharp shooting by Jeffrey Boone and Justin Dublin. Each contributed 6 points in the 14-2 run. But QCC (7-15) suffered a major loss when their lone inside presence Herman Vanegas fouled out with 4:50 left in the game. Still Queensborough showed signs of life when Teron Simpson hit a trifecta with 1:11 to cut the deficit to 91-88. A Sebastian Prophete lay-up cut the lead to one, before Stevens hit one of two free throws to push the BMCC lead to 92-90 with 0:11 left. After a timeout, the Tigers set up a play for Boone whose shot at the buzzer glanced off the rim. The Panthers (11-12) advance to face Kingsborough in the finale for the third straight year Friday at 7:45 pm.
Victor Ramirez and Roderick Stevens (10 rebounds) spearheaded the Panther offense with 20 points apiece, with Paul Arthur adding 17 points. Boone led QCC with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Vanegas added 19.
In the women's semifinal, Queensborough knocked off Kingsborough on their home court by 52-48 despite a game-high 33 points from Michelle McGuire. Anclin Perez paced the winners with 29. QCC will face four-time defending champions and host BMCC Lady Panthers in Friday's opening game at 5:30 pm.
