2003 CUNY / Con Edison Community College Women's Final

BMCC Women Win CUNYAC Title #6

New York, NY - Six years in and the trophy has never left the confines of Borough of Manhattan Community College. The Panthers easily won the 2003 CUNY Athletic Conference / Con Edison Women's Basketball Championship, topping Kingsborough Community College 54-29 on theiur home floor in downtown Manhattan.

"It hasn't been easy this season,” said BMCC head coach Rodney Carr, who has been at the helm for all six tournament titles. ”The team we expected to have this year and the team we've been putting out there have been very different. We had many injuries, but it's always a thrill to win CUNY's.” BMCC (10-11) led from the start, with a 9-4 lead, four minutes into the game, the Panthers extended their lead with a 7-0 run and went into the half up 25-15. Led by Tournament Most Valuable Player Fanta Sissoko with four points during the span, BMCC started the second stanza on an impressive 30-0 run and never looked back.

"I'm very pleased to get this award,” said the 5'11” Sissoko, who led the game with 11 points, 20 rebounds and six steals. "I'm just trying to work hard to improve and move on to a four-year school next year.” Freshman Latoya Steele (Brooklyn, NY) added 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Fellow frosh Veronica Sherman, a teammate of Steele's at Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay High School, added eight points.

Kingsborough (1-15) was led by sophomore guard Traci Davis (Brooklyn, NY) with 11 points. Krystle Garcia (Brooklyn, NY) had nine and center Janelle Frett (Apopka, FL) added seven.

"Fanta's a wonderful young player,” added Carr. "As an international student, she works very hard in the classroom, while maintaining a hectic job schedule. It's players like her that make our program so successful.”

The Community College women's tournament was added to the slate in 1998, to assist the growing women's basketball programs in CUNYAC. In 2003-04, the conference is expected to have four teams for the first time in history.
