Bronx Defends Championship at The Stadium
Bronx, NY - The defending champion Bronx Community College used their
home field advantage to the fullest in winning their second straight CUNY Athletic
Conference Community College Baseball Championship at Yankee Stadium. The Broncos
took a commanding 6-0 lead after the second inning, on their way to a 7-4 seven-inning
victory over Kingsborough Community College.
Michols Pena (Bronx, NY) was named the game's Most Valuable Player after hurling 6 2/3 innings, yielding only five hits and two earned runs, while striking out eight batters. He also was walked three times (two intentional) and had a RBI single for the victors. Sophomore catcher John Arroyo (Bronx, NY) was the hitting star, going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
"It's a great feeling to be able to defend our championship, since we were unable to play at Yankee Stadium last season," said Pena, a sophomore. "I wouldn't change this feeling for the world. We have great teamwork here and I hope that they can do it again next season."
Bronx (22-11), who has won the title three of the last four years, scored two unearned runs in the bottom half of the first inning after an error on a routine ground out, followed by a sacrifice fly and two errors on a steal of second base. The Broncos exploded for four more runs in the second inning as Anthony Perez and Daniel DeLeon provided RBI singles and Oscar Lorenzo added a sacrifice fly for another run.
Kingsborough (14-12) finally got on the board when 3B Christian Chung (Queens, NY) knocked in a run with a triple in the 5th inning, and scored following RF Kyle Gibson's (Brooklyn, NY) RBI single.
"We feel like this is our stadium," said BCC head coach Adolpho DeJesus, whose squad came within one game of qualifying for the National playoffs this year. "We took it right to them and got the early lead and Michols held them off."
