8am Breakfast
10am Clinic at Universidad Central
12pm Practice at Universidad Central
8:30pm Game vs. Universidad Technologico Equino
Our day began again with breakfast at Hotel Marriott in Quito. Once again the food was excellent. The staff met to prepare for the day's events. We discussed the importance of the clinics for the Ecuadorians.
The clinic was held at Universidad Central. Twenty- five students and two coaches arrived for the clinic. Our players introduced themselves to the students and the students welcomed us and wished us good luck in our stay. Our coaching staff demonstrated key fundamentals to the game of basketball. (Ball handling, defensive footwork, pick and rolls, give and goes, bounce pass, chest pass, baseball pass). After our demonstrations the students themselves interacted and did the drills. What a success! Morganna Green said The clinic was great, I really enjoyed working with their kids and would love to run my own program for children ages 7-16. This trip has made me realize that we take a lot of things for granted back home.
Off to the game we go, which is in the city of Sangoquil against the Universidad Technologico Equino. After being down 5 after the first quarter, 19-14, we seemed to look a little sharper. The lights went out literally and figuratively on us, in which U.T.E. outscored us 24-13 during the second quarter (Now 43-27 at half). The start of the third quarter U.T.E. went on a 9-0 run to open their lead to 25. CUNY never got closer than 21 points. They were physically better than us and we shied away from their physical play, said Zak Ivkovic. CUNY loses 62-41 and falls to 1-1 on the trip. Leading the way for CUNY was Jennifer Ithier with 11 points, 6 steals, and Rannie Miles chipped in 7 points off of the bench.
CUNY's next opponent is Universidad de las Americas.
