Hunter Hawks Make History at the Tennis Center
Flushing Meadows, NY - Hunter College won the school’s second consecutive
CUNY Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center
today, beating arch-rival Staten Island by a margin of ten points (51-41), scoring the
most points in the tournament’s history.
Hunter, the regular season champions (8-6, 7-0 CUNYAC), were a dominant force in the
two-day tournament, winning their way to nine flight finals, winning six of them. The
Dolphins (8-3) played Hunter head-to-head in seven finales, with CSI coming out on top
twice, in third and fourth singles.
“It was great to see the teamwork needed to win this tournament,” said Hunter
head coach Jocelyn Cruz. “The new players stepped in and produced, allowing us to have
a successful season.”
Staten Island, the 1998 & 1999 champions, was dealt a big blow to their title
hopes when Dolphin senior Amanda Klein (Staten Island, NY) was forced to retire due
to a knee injury. The two-time finalist won both her singles and doubles quarterfinal
matches, but was unable to continue, leaving her Dolphins with a big hill to climb.
“It’s a tough break,” said CSI head coach Bruce Knittle, who coached his twentieth
CUNYAC tournament this weekend. “But we don’t make excuses. The credit goes to Hunter
for winning the championship.”
At the first singles flight, it was a battle between two familiar foes, Hunter senior
Iris Antonescu (Astoria, NY) and CSI junior Liza Dungo (Staten Island, NY). Two years
ago, Antonescu topped Dungo in the #1 final, but an injured Antonescu missed out on
the final last season, paving the way for Dungo to capture the title.
This time, Antonescu came out on top, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. “I lost focus in the first set,
said Antonescu, who sports a 4-1 record over Dungo. “I’m known for doing that, I brought
myself back up though and played smarter tennis. I tried to move her around more and slow
down the pace. Liza likes balls with a lot of pace.”
Antonescu and #3 singles player Rachel Swygert (Las Vegas, NV) fell in the #1 doubles
final, losing to Brooklyn’s duo of Anna Machkina and Jackie Kasser. The two Brooklyn
natives won easily, 6-2, 6-3, leading the Bridges to a third place team finish with 26.
For the second straight year, junior Maureen McBride (Ridgefield, CT) was the
standout player in the tournament, winning both number two flights, singles and doubles.
In two seasons, McBride has never lost a match to a CUNYAC opponent, beating Baruch’s
Barbara Boczkowska, 6-1, 6-2 in singles, raising her record to 16-0 on the season.
McBride then teamed with sophomore Marilyn Penaco (Bronx, NY), who was battling elbow
tendonitis all season, to beat CSI’s Dharma Musacchia and Giorgia Penso, 6-2, 6-3.
Speaking of Penso, a sophomore from Venice, Italy, beat Penaco in the fourth singles
final 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, in the most exciting match of the day. Musacchia, a junior from
Brooklyn, NY, was CSI’s other victor, winning #3 singles over Hawk freshman Rachel
Swygert (Las Vegas, NV), 6-2, 6-2.
Hunter swept the lower flights as junior Esther Montoro (Madrid, Spain) topped
CSI’s Nadine Newbold 6-4, 6-2 at number five, while freshman SooJung Kim (Eureka, CA)
defeated Miryam Qiunn-Doblas, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at number six. Kim later paired up
with another newcomer Shirley Vargas (Bronx, NY) to take #3 doubles, 6-4, 6-3.
“She’s a very positive influence on the team,” said Cruz of Kim. “She’s a
competitor that will definitely move up the ranks in the coming years.”
