Player Of The Week

JOE LONGOBARDI, BARUCH, Jr. / G / 6'0" / Staten Island, NY

A junior guard for the Bearcats, Longobardi is finding comfort in head coach Ray Rankis' three guard system this season. The Moore Catholic High School alum averaged 14.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 16-32 (.500) from the field and 7-18 (.389) from the three-point line and 3-3 from the charity stripe. In a 69-48 win over NYU over the weekend, he had 17 points on 7-12 FG shooting.

Rookie Of The Week

SHACUN MALAVE, CITY TECH Fr. / C / 6'7" / Bronx, NY
A freshman from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, Malave made an impressive debut for the Yellow Jackets this past Sunday. In a two-point loss, the 6'7" center had 27 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and shot 12-17 from the field. A liberal arts student at City Tech, he planned to play in the fall but couldn't pass up an opportunity to play for the National team of El Salvador. According to coach Ray Amalbert, “He could be an impact player in the league if he keeps playing at this pace."

Men's Basketball Notes

BARUCH BEARCATS (10-1, 2-0)
The Bearcats were knocked off of the unbeaten pedestal in the championship game of the Montclair State Holiday Tournament by the host squad, 75-66, which improved to 9-0 with the win. They got back to their winning ways on Saturday with a 69-48 win over NYU as center Garry Etienne had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Baruch currently leads CUNYAC in both scoring offense and scoring defense at 75.7 ppg and 65.2 ppg for a margin of 10.5.

BROOKLYN BRIDGES (0-7, 0-2)
The Bridges are in the midst of a month-long break and are still searching for their first win on the season. Their first game back is January 7th against St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn), who they’ve already played and lost by a mere four points (83-79) back in early December. On the bright side for Brooklyn has been the play of sophomores Shakespeare Thomas at 19.4 ppg and Jason Fulford with 17.0 ppg and 4.2 apg.

CCNY BEAVERS (5-5, 1-1)
The Beavers welcomed back senior Dana Warner who had a broken bone in his hand, just in time as they were on the short end of four of five games in his absence. In the two games since his return against Castleton State and Mount St. Vincent the 6’2 guard had 30 and 17 points respectively. Fellow senior Edwin Caceras is averaging 18.9 ppg and 9.0 to lead City after scoring 29 against CMSV on Saturday.

HUNTER HAWKS (1-9, 1-1)
Preseason CUNYAC Player of the Year Lorcan Precious continues to lead the Hawks in both scoring (14.3) and assists (4.5), while Kingsborough Community College transfer Ricardo Reimers has made a smooth transition to the senior league, averaging 13.2 points and shooting .528 from the field.

JOHN JAY BLOODHOUNDS (3-7,1-1)
The Bloodhounds struggled to blend new players into the system against William Paterson on December 30, falling at home by 21 points. According to head coach Guy Rancourt, forward Eric Emilsen made a strong debut with seven points and six rebounds, while sophomore Omar Malcolm, who did not play last season, struggled with one point and one steal in fifteen minutes of action.

LEHMAN LIGHTNING (2-8, 0-2)
The Lightning have some optimism despite dropping their last four with the return of 2001-02 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Luis Chavez, who notched 15 points and assists in his first game on Saturday against the College of New Jersey. Meanwhile, junior Edgar Lugo leads the squad with 14.9 points a game following a 27-point performance.

MEDGAR EVERS COUGARS (4-8,1-1)
The Cougars made a stunning comeback in the consolation game of the Hampden- Sydney College Tournament against Hunter, winning the game 95-86 with a 64-point second half after being down by as many as 33 points in the same stanza. CUNY All- Star Jebah Clayton scored a league-high 39 points in on 17-31 shooting and added 13 rebounds five assists and five steals. Interestingly, after competing in four tournaments and playing on a neutral floor each time and four home games on the schedule, the Cougars will play their first away contest on Saturday at CSI.

CITY TECH YELLOW JACKETS (1-9, 0-2)
Off since December 13, the Yellow Jackets fell to FDU-Florham yesterday, 66-64, despite a standout performance by newcomer Shacon Malave with 27 points and 12 boards. City Tech will look for league wins on Tuesday and Thursday when they travel to York and Brooklyn this week. Junior guard Nkosi Hamilton continues to lead the team in scoring (15.2), field goal percentage (.466) and steals (2.9).

STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS (7-4, 2-0)
The first Annual CSI Tournament of Heroes, played over the break was a huge success for the College despite the host team’s fourth place finish. The families of former hoopsters Terrance Aiken, Scott Davison and Tom Hanafin who were killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001, were presented with the first three retired jerseys in school history. A donation from the ticket and t-shirt sales will be to the New York City Firefighter’s Widows and Children’s Fund in the coming weeks.

YORK CARDINALS (3-6, 2-0)
The Cardinals have dropped seven of their last eight games, before they jump back into conference action on Tuesday against City Tech. On the year, York continues to be led by freshman Kwesi Liverpool, who’s scoring at a 17-point clip. Junior forward Michael Thompson is second in scoring at 11.4 ppg and first in rebounds at 6.9 per game.
