Men's Basketball Notes
BARUCH BEARCATS (8-0, 2-0)
In his 20th season, head coach Ray Rankis has the newly named Bearcats off to a
flying start. The Bearcats have been successful so far with a very balanced attack as
five different players led the team in scoring in their eight wins with senior guard John
Alesi leading the way with a 14.2 average. Junior center Gary Etienne and senior guard
Daniel Guilford both follow at 11.3 ppg. Last Monday, Alesi led the Bearcats to a 2-0
mark in CUNYAC with a game high 26 points in a win over John Jay.
BROOKLYN BRIDGES (0-7, 0-2)
The Bridges enter nearly a month-long break still searching for their first win on the
season. Their first game back is January 7th against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), who
they've already played and lost by a mere four points (83-79) two weeks ago. On the
bright side for Brooklyn has been the play of sophomore forward Shakespeare Thomas
at 19.4 ppg, while sophomore guard Jason Fulford has been stellar as well with
17.0 points and 4.2 assists a game.
CCNY BEAVERS (3-3, 1-1)
The Beavers have played inconsistently so far this season, bringing a 3-3 mark into
the break. Head coach Andy Stampfel's squad has a rare December 23rd tilt at
Yeshiva on the slate before going into a holiday tournament at Salem State (MA) the
following week. Senior forward Edwin Caceras has been a sound leader for the
Beavers with 20.8 points and 10.0 rebounds a game, both on the CUNYAC leaderboard.
Senior transfer Dana Warner has averaged 14.1 ppg, but has missed the last few due
to a hand injury.
HUNTER HAWKS (1-6, 1-1)
After starting the season at 0-4, the Hawks topped CCNY at their annual homecoming
82-75, but the team was not able to build on that, losing their last two games going into
a two-week break. Junior guard Lorcan Precious had a season-high 23 points in their
lone win. Junior Ricardo Reimers, a transfer from Kingsborough CC had 16 points in
the Hawks loss at FDU-Florham last week.
JOHN JAY BLOODHOUNDS (3-4,1-1)
A streaky team, the Bloodhounds are 3-4 heading into their break after dropping two
games last week, following a three-game win streak. Next up for the ‘Hounds is a
home game versus NJAC powerhouse William Paterson on December 30. Junior
forward Timmy White (21.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and sophomore guard Pablo Palma (13.7 ppg)
have been atop the scoreboard for all seven contests for the team this season.
LEHMAN LIGHTNING (2-6, 0-2)
The Lightning are under .500 for the first time in three seasons under head coach
Steve Schulman, as they have struggled finding balance among the lineup. After
starting out 0-4 the Lightning won two in a row before falling twice last week. In a fivepoint
loss to St. Joseph's (LI) newcomer Grady Thompson led the team with 12 points
off the bench.
MEDGAR EVERS COUGARS (3-4,1-1)
After reaching the CUNYAC final last season, the Cougars have fallen back to the
middle of the pack with a 3-4 mark as they enjoy a 12-day layoff. New head coach
George Moore has won three of the their last four as they welcomed back CUNY allstar
guard Jebah Clayton recently. Clayton averaged 24.5 points in his first two
contests back.
CITY TECH YELLOW JACKETS (1-8, 0-2)
Plagued by an undersized squad the Yellow Jackets are off to a 1-8 season following
a great effort at CSI last Friday night. City Tech had a 47-41 lead early in the second
half before having to take off a pesky full court press as only seven players dressed
for the contest. Junior guard Nkosi Hamilton led the way with 16 points and junior
forward Roger Redhead had 15 in the CUNYAC game.
STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS (7-1, 2-0)
In their first game this season, Staten Island, the defending champions, lost by 35
points. Since then the Dolphins have rolled off seven straight wins including a 2-0
CUNY mark. Last Friday, CSI beat City Tech behind 19 points and seven rebounds
from sophomore forward John Smith. Sophomore guard Michael Stewart has averaged
20.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists so far this year. CSI hosts their 1st Annual
Tournament of Heroes on Saturday and Sunday, December 28th and 29th to honor the
three former players that lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
YORK CARDINALS (3-4, 2-0)
The Cardinals, picked by the coaches to win CUNYAC's South Division, are off to a
2-0 CUNYAC mark. But head coach Ron St. John, now in his 15th season is still
unsure of his team, which is being led by a freshman. 6'3 Kwesi Liverpool, a forward
out of Holy Cross HS is leading the Cards with 17.7 points and 4.3 rebounds. The team
returns to action with two games against New Jersey schools Rutgers-Camden (Dec.
20) and William Paterson (Dec. 28).
