Player Of The Week

JAMEES WRIGHT, BARUCH, Sr. / F / 5’8” / New York, NY
A four-year CUNY player, Wright has steadily improved under head coach Bob DiNardo, bringing the team along in the process. Over the break, the Bearcats went 2-2, but the 2000-01 CUNY all-star averaged 16.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 3.0 assists. The Murry Bergtraum High School graduate is netting 16.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and leads CUNYAC with 5.6 steals a game. Baruch will host Hunter on Thursday in a battle of 2-0 North Division teams.


Rookie Of The Week

TIFFANY THOMPSON, LEHMAN Fr. / F / 5’10” / Mount Vernon, NY Thompson, one of Lehman’s midyear additions is already assisting in the Lightning’s effort to correct a slow start. In her three games so far, the Mount Vernon High School alumna averaged 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 2.7 assists, as the team went 1-2 over the break. Against the College of Notre Dame on Friday, Thompson hit a three-pointer bank shot to give the Lightning win number one on the season.

Women's Basketball Notes

BARUCH BEARCATS (7-2, 2-0)
One day before the men, the newly named Bearcats also fell for the first time this season in the inaugural Baruch Holiday Tournament championship, 54-51 to Rutgers- Newark. This past weekend, coach Bob DiNardo’s team placed third in the Potsdam State Tournament behind 22 points from freshman forward Jessenia Marrero and 14 points from senior guard Stephanie Trahan.

BROOKLYN BRIDGES (1-9, 0-2)
Freshman center Kelly Weismuller continues to lead the Bridges, scoring 18 points in their loss to a sharpshooting College of Notre Dame (Maryland) squad on Saturday. The Brooklyn native is averaging 17.6 points, 11.0 rebounds and a league leading .728 field goal percentage. Also of note, Kelly’s brother Danny is a senior forward on the Brooklyn men’s basketball team.

CCNY BEAVERS (5-5, 1-1)
Senior forward Lauren Cargill continues to pile-up the hardware after winning Most Valuable Player honors in the inaugural CCNY Tournament over the weekend. In the two games, she had 40 points to increase the CUNYAC all-time scoring mark to 1924. Freshman Juwariya Abdul-Karim was also named to the all-tournament team with eight points and ten rebounds in the championship game over New Jersey City.

HUNTER HAWKS (6-4, 2-0)
Following a two game swing in Savannah, Georgia and a non-conference loss to Kean, the defending CUNYAC champions will gladly slide back into CUNYAC play with games against Lehman and Baruch this week. Freshman forward Topaz Robbins had a strong tournament with two double-doubles. She had 12 points and 10 rebounds versus Wisconsin-Superior and 11 points and 11 boards against Hartwick.

JOHN JAY BLOODHOUNDS (5-4, 0-2)
The Bloodhounds split a pair of games in Maryland at the Villa Julie Tournament in their only action. Junior forward Cherith Pointer ‘rebounded’ from a 5-point, 4-rebound performance against Clarkson with a 16-point, 13-rebound game in a win over the host school. The Brooklynite is seventh in CUNYAC and leads the ‘Hounds with 9.8 caroms a game.

LEHMAN LIGHTNING (1-8, 0-2)
Lehman hopes to turn the heat up in the new year with two key re-additions, as head coach Eric Harrison welcomes back Kathy Santiago and Allene Williams. In the only season she played college basketball, Santiago was the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year in 1999-00 after netting 18.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.9 steals. Williams also played one season (2000-01), averaging 8.5 points and 8.2 rebounds.

MEDGAR EVERS COUGARS (2-7,1-1)
The Lady Cougars fell for the second time in two weeks to Yeshiva despite 21 points from Jessica English. Medgar Evers is now down in North Carolina for a two-game road swing with games at Bennett College and Salem College before returning for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday.

CITY TECH YELLOW JACKETS (0-7, 0-2)
The Yellow Jackets have been off since December 13th. City Tech returns with CUNYAC contests at York and Brooklyn this week. Going into the break, freshman Melodie Noel was the team’s top scorer at 9.0 ppg with classmate Deena Felix close behind at 8.2 ppg. Nichola Ball leads them on the boards with 10.1 rpg.

STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS (6-5, 2-0)
CSI became the first CUNY women’s team in memory to travel to sunny California over the break. In the four games, 2001-02 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Jacclyn Rock averaged 14.5 points and 11.3 rebounds that included three double-doubles. In their only win, she had 18 points and 12 boards on 8-12 field goal shooting.

YORK CARDINALS (2-7, 2-0)
The Lady Cardinals are looking to stay undefeated in CUNYAC play with a home game versus City Tech on Tuesday. Senior guard Garrianne Brown is the only player scoring in double digits with a 20.1 average, while junior forward Tuere Mitchell leads on the boards with a 9.6 average.
