Women's Basketball Notes
BARUCH BEARCATS (5-0,2-0)
It must be the gym! Also in their first season at the brand new ARC Arena, the
Bearcats are sporting a perfect, school record-setting 5-0 mark that includes CUNYAC
North Division wins over Lehman and John Jay. Senior guard Stephanie Trahan paces
the league with 23.6 ppg, while fellow senior Jamees Wright is averaging 16.8 points.
The duo also leads in steals at 5.0 and 6.6 respectively.
BROOKLYN BRIDGES (1-8,0-2)
Under first year head coach Alex Lang, the Bridges won their first contest since the
2000 season with a 35-33 win over Polytechnic a couple of weeks ago. Since then
Brooklyn has dropped their last five, but Lang is optimistic, as freshman Kelly
Weismuller has been as good as advertised with 36 points against Yeshiva last week.
On the year, Weismuller is averaging 17.6 points and 11.0 rebounds.
CCNY BEAVERS (3-3,1-1)
Senior forward Lauren Cargill is CUNYAC's new all-time leading scorer with 1,842
points, eclipsing the 1,830 by Baruch's Hillary Williams from 1987-91. The Valley
Stream, NY native is on pace to be only the second person to score 2,000 points in
history. Guard Samantha Halpern is having a solid senior campaign with 12.5 points,
8.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists, while sophomore guard Kim Neos is scoring at 14.2 ppg.
HUNTER HAWKS (6-1, 2-0)
The defending CUNYAC champions are off to a familiar start with a 2-0 conference
mark after beating division rivals John Jay and CCNY. Over the weekend, the Hawks
topped William Paterson behind 18 points each from senior guards Jezel Rodriguez
and Jen Rogers. Junior center Tania Blanco had a double-double with 14 points and 14
rebounds.
JOHN JAY BLOODHOUNDS (4-3, 0-2)
Despite an overall winning mark, the Bloodhounds have gotten off to an 0-2 CUNYAC
mark as they welcome new interim coach Dr. Rob Fox to the Westside. Junior guard
December Bails leads the team with 16.8 points, while sophomore forward Tiffany
Crippen adds 15.3 points. At only 5'8”, junior forward Cherrith Pointer continues to do
well on the boards, averaging 10.3 rebounds.
LEHMAN LIGHTNING (0-6, 0-2)
Probably the biggest surprise in CUNYAC basketball have been the struggles of the
Lightning, coming off an appearance in the CUNYAC final a year ago. Head coach
Eric Harrison's team has struggled, despite the outstanding play of freshman forward
Melissa Escalera out of Stevenson HS in the Bronx. Through the first six contests,
Escalera is averaging 20.7 points and 13.8 rebounds.
MEDGAR EVERS COUGARS (2-6,1-1)
The Lady Cougars have won two of their last three games going into a two -week
break. Unfortunately for the team, they return on December 22nd with a rematch
against Yeshiva, who beat them in the final of their own tournament. Senior center
Keisha Toms leads with 14.2 points and 9.8 rebounds.
CITY TECH YELLOW JACKETS (0-7, 0-2)
Still searching for their first win, the Yellow Jackets played inspired ball last week in a
CUNYAC loss at Staten Island. Freshmen Latoya Harris and Melodie Noel had 10 and
9 points respectively for head coach Brenda Alexander's young team. Forward Deena
Felix leads the team with 9.8 points and 6.4 rebounds.
STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS (7-1, 2-0)
The Dolphins are back! After battling the injury bug most of last season, CSI seems
ready for another championship run. In their win over City Tech, they were led by three
of the team's four seniors as guard April Nelson netted 15 points, forward Keisha Cook
had 12 and forward Jacclyn Badagliacco had 10 points and 6 boards. Junior Pam
Barone actually leads the balanced squad in scoring at 13.8 ppg as they have a threegame
winning streak heading into their holiday road trip to California.
YORK CARDINALS (2-5, 2-0)
The Lady Cardinals are off to a 2-0 start in CUNYAC play after topping Medgar Evers
and Brooklyn so far. Senior Garrianne Brown, an all-star in 2000-01 who did not play
last season, is off to a teriffic start with 23.2 points and 3.0 assists a game. This
weekend York will travel to Middletown, Connecticut to play in the Wesleyan Tournament
before taking a couple of weeks off for the holidays.
