CUNYAC Wraps Historic Year
21 CUNYAC Student-Athletes Grab 43 All-American Honors May 20th, 2003
Bronx, NY - The best season for City University of New York Athletic Conference student-athlete notoriety is just completed,
with 21 student-athletes capturing 43 All-American honors in 2002-03. All but one of the aforementioned honors came in Track
and Field, highlighted by Lehman College, a liberal arts commuter school from the Bronx with no outdoor track, finishing in
second place at the NCAA Championships not once- but twice this season.
"We've never had this much talent and recognition before,” said head coach Ed Zarowin, who's just finishing his 19th
season at Hunter College, a school with no campus in the midst of Manhattan skyscrapers.
"It's a fantastic accomplishment.
Everybody along the line is doing a better job, especially the coaches who are doing a marvelous job.”
Lehman Track & Field head coach Lesleigh Hogg boasts the most honorees with six, including the most decorated
CUNYAC student-athletes in senior Paulette Baldwin (11-time All-American), the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track Athlete of the Year
and sophomore Alecia Watson (9-time All-American).
Also on the track, York College had four All-Americans for the second straight year, including freshman Kenya Benjamin,
who earned two honors during the indoor season. Kingsborough Community College sophomore Maria Haye was the junior
circuit's top athlete with four third place finishes to became a four-time All-American in one weekend, including the Heptathlon.
In team sports, the CUNYAC sent five senior college teams (women's volleyball, men's soccer, men's & women's basketball
and softball) to NCAA Championships. Meanwhile, Borough of Manhattan Community College basketball forward Fanta
Sissoko was also named to the All-American team this year.
"While track has traditionally been a source of All-American honors for CUNY athletes,” said CUNYAC Associate Director
Zak Ivkovic. "The accomplishments in 2003 have gone beyond everyone's wildest expectations. This determination from our
student-athletes and coaches has brought the sport to another level.”
