Medgar Evers Enters NCAA

For the first time, the Medgar Evers College men's soccer team travels to Babson Park, Massachusetts for the 2002 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday, November 13. The Cougars are the #5 seed in their bracket and will face #4 seed Babson College at 1:00 pm on their opponents campus. The winner of that match will face #1 Drew University in second round action on Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 am at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. The NCAA selects 44 teams for this national event and divides them into eight brackets. A single elimination format, the NCAA Tournament continues through the national championship match on December 1.

The Cougars (12-7-1) were surprisingly dominant in the CUNY Tournament final, beating top-seeded CCNY, 4-0. With the win, the small college from Brooklyn, earned the school's firstever NCAA berth in a team sport. Their leading goal scorer is sophomore Sekou Forbes with seven goals in 13 games, while freshman midfielder Noel Watson leads the league with 14 assists. In the first round, Medgar Evers will face Babson (11-5-5), the champions of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference NEWMAC), in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

"I am delighted that we are finally able to get over the hurdle and into the NCAA's," said 13th year Cougars coach Stanley Harmon. "But this is just the first step. These guys are committed to making this a great season."
