2002 CUNYAC / BRINE Men's Soccer Quarterfinals

November 2nd.

Cyrus and CCNY Craft Shutout Over John Jay, 2-0

soccerNew York, NY -- The #1 seed in the CUNY Athletic Conference, CCNY, defeated John Jay College 2-0 in the tournament quarterfinals at home.  With this victory CCNY advanced to the semifinals and improved their record to 11-2-1 overall, 8-0-1 in CUNYAC. Durraine McKenzie scored the first goal with 14:28 to go in the first half on an assist by Santiago Helman.  Helman scored the second tally on a penalty kick on the 16:14 mark during the second half.  "It was a hard fought game by both teams under cold conditions," said head coach Ray D'Argenio. "But there is a lot of work to do for the Wednesday game."  John Jay finishes the season at 6-15.

Medgar Evers Stops Baruch with 4-3 CUNYAC Quarterfinal Overtime Win

Staten Island, NY -- Omar Gordon scored in the 95th minute to lift Medgar Evers College to a 4-3 victory over Baruch in a CUNY Athletic Conference men's soccer quarterfinal match Saturday at the College of Staten Island. The golden goal spoiled a frantic three-goal Baruch comeback in the last nine minutes of regulation time.

The Cougars (10-7-1) scored three times in a 13-minute stretch of the first half to seize a commanding lead. In the 21st minute, Thomas Nelson's cross from the end line went right to Sekou Forbes, whose shot tucked inside the right post. Eight minutes later, Roger Delfosse laid the ball off to Deighton Cyrus on his right. Cyrus' shot deflected and rolled achingly toward the left post, where Delfosse put in a sliding finish. Delfosse was again the beneficiary in the 33rd minute, when Noel Watson found him with a through ball up the middle of the field, which Delfosse finished calmly to the left post.

Despite the 3-0 deficit, the Bearcats (3-9-1) did not look completely outclassed, and proceeded to put pressure on the Cougars throughout period two. It seemed as if Baruch would run out of time, but the Bearcats caught a break when senior Rachid Chergui (Long Island City, N.Y./Ibn Khaldoun [Morocco]) was hauled down in the box in the 82nd minute. MEC goalkeeper Ancil Steeple saved the penalty from Baruch senior Christopher Radjpaul (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech), but Chergui followed up smartly to draw Baruch within 3-1. Less than two minutes later, junior Douglas Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./Samuel Gompers) beat the Cougar defense with a smart chip and sent freshman Bogdan Radu (Long Island City, N.Y./William Cullen Bryant) in on goal. Radu finished inside the right post, and Medgar Evers was back on its heels.

With just less than two minutes remaining, the Bearcats completed the improbable comeback. A clear handball in the box gave Baruch another penalty chance, and this time it was the rookie Radu who blasted it down the middle past the diving Steeple.

In golden goal overtime, it took less than five minutes for the outcome to be decided. Medgar Evers worked the ball to the left of the Baruch goal, and Forbes' cross was deflected across the face of the goal. Gordon waited at the far post , but when Baruch defenders closed in, Forbes angled his shot back toward the left post, and the shot tucked neatly inside the side netting.

Medgar Evers, which had beaten the Bearcats by a 7-0 count back on October 5, outshot Baruch by a 22-18 margin. Steeple made five saves in the win, while Baruch senior Jason Nicholas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Presentation College [Trinidad]), playing just his third game in goal this season, stopped a dozen Cougar shots.

Baruch's season is at an end, while Medgar Evers advances to the semifinals of the CUNYAC tournament, to be contested at the Metropolitan Oval in the Maspeth section of Queens on Wednesday.

City Tech Wins First CUNY Tournament Debut Over York, 2-1

Ridgewood, NY -- It was a struggle, but the New York City College of Technology Yellow Jackets advanced to the semifinal round of the CUNYAC men's soccer championships with a 2-1 quarterfinal round victory over the York College Cardinals under the lights at the Metropolitan Oval on November 2.

NYCCT freshman forward Rich Franco (Mount Vernon H.S./Mount Vernon, NY) scored the deciding goal, his eight goal in eight games,in the 87th minute, skittering the ball past York freshman goal keeper Conroy Clarke (Camperdown/Jamaica,W.I.) (3 saves). City Tech had opened the scoring, after a scoreless first half, in the 55th minute, when midfielder Raphael Lynch (Jennings Secondary/Antigua) skimmed the turf to score unassisted past Clarke. York knotted it at 1-1 in the 66th minute when freshman defender Ryan Reid headed the ball off a pass from sophomore midfielder Cheik Keita past NYCCT freshman goal keeper Ricardo Johnson (Campus Magnet/Jamaica, W.I.) (3 saves). City Tech outshot York, 13-4.

York gave City Tech a scare in the 88th minute, when it appeared a goal had been scored; however, the referees called the play as offsides. Following the game, in response to their unsportsmanlike conduct (protesting the offsides call to the referees too forcefully) Keita (Aski Mohamed/Bamako, Mali) received a red card, and sophomore forward Gianni Laverole (Inem/Colombia) received a yellow card. During the match itself, City Tech freshman midfielder Ricardo Williams (Holmwood Technical/Jamaica, W.I.) was assessed a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 44th minute, and City Tech freshman midfielder/defender Carlos Delacruz (Bryant/Lima, Peru) was given a yellow card for the same offense in the 66th minute.

City Tech next plays the number 2 seed, Medgar Evers, at the Metropolitan Oval at 4 p.m. Medgar Evers lost an earlier match to NYCCT on Oct. 8, 3-0, at Brooklyn College. The Medgar Evers Cougars outlasted the Baruch Bearcats, 4-3, on November 2 to reach the semifinal round.

Hunter Blanks CSI For Berth into CUNY Semifinals, 2-0

Staten Island, NY -- The fifth seeded Hunter College Hawks used an early goal and stiff defensive pressure to smother the 4th-seeded CSI Dolphins, in a 2-0 shutout. Satoru Moriwaki tallied the early goal for the Hawks, turning a brilliant entry pass from Lee Cohen into a striking shot past Dolphin goaltender Valon Osmani in the 27th minute.

Using as many as ten players in the back the rest of the way, Hunter's defense took over, allowing only five shots on goal against goaltender Dan Djura. The frustrated Dolphins were running short on chances in the second frame, when in the 82nd minute, a penalty in the box gave the Hawks a golden opportunity to seal the game.

Takama Sugata nailed the penalty kick home for the Hawks, giving the visitors the commanding edge the rest of the way. The well balanced game saw the Hawks out-shoot the Dolphins, 6-5. Both teams committed 15 fouls apiece. A total of five yellow warning cards were issued, two to the Hawks ( Polykarpos Kotrinos, Jason Chin), and three to the Dolphins (Kamal Alhoraibi, Mitchell Poormand, and Marwan Amer).
