Hunter Heads To NCAA’S
For the fourth consecutive year, the Hunter
College women's volleyball team travels to Rochester,
NY, for the 2002 NCAA Division III Championship
Tournament on Thursday, November 14.
The Hawks are the #6 seed in the New York
Bracket and will face #3 seed Oneonta State at
7:00 pm on the campus of #1 Nazareth College.
Other teams competing in the bracket are #2
New York University, #4 Union College, and #5
Vassar College. The NCAA selects 48 teams for
this national event and divides them into eight
brackets of six teams each. A single elimination
format, the NCAA Tournament continues through
the national championship match on December 7.
The Hawks (22-21) are led by CUNY
Player of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable
Player Jezel Rodriguez, the NCAA's alltime
career record holder for service aces with
546 in four seasons. In the first round, Hunter
will face a common foe in Oneonta State (30-
12), the SUNYAC champions, as the two schools
have faced twice (0-2) this season. The Red Dragons
topped the Hawks 3 games to 2 two weeks
ago in the New York State Championships, held
at Hunter. The winner will play a second round
match on Friday at 4:30 pm.
"I am very happy to face off a team that
we have faced this season," said fourth year
Hunter coach Lauren Caiaccia, who is seeking
the school's first NCAA win. "It gives us a great chance to plan an attack for
the match to come away with a victory."
