New York, NY - Shervon James (Kean) converted a lay-up with one second remaining to give the New Jersey Athletic Conference a 67-65 victory over the City University of New York in the fourth annual CUNYAC/NJAC Senior All-Star Challenge at John Jay College.
Following a timeout with just twelve seconds left, CUNY was looking to set-up the game-winning play, but James stepped in front of a pass by guard December Bails (John Jay) and went in for a breakaway lay-up.
The NJAC led 31-11 late in the opening stanza but CUNY was able to close within 36-22 at halftime. Jen Agosto (Hunter) drained a three-point goal with 8:45 remaining to give CUNY a 50-49 advantage, their first lead since the early stages of the game. CUNY still led 63-60 after a jumper by Agosto with 2:33 left, but Christina Mason (Stockton) converted a lay-up and Kellie Rice (Kean) followed with a three-point goal to give NJAC a 65-63 lead with fifty-four seconds remaining. CUNY tied the game at 65-65 as December Bails (John Jay) went coast-to-coast on a lay-up with forty-eight seconds left.
Rice was named the Most Valuable Player for the NJAC after scoring 17 points and coming up with four steals. Janae Brumby (Kean) added 11 points.
Rahmat Balogun (CCNY) was named the MVP of the CUNY squad after scoring a team-high 16 points. Hunter’s Tania Blanco added 8 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
