Jamaica, NY - Top-seeded Staten Island (20-5) advanced to the semifinals of the 2004 CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's
Basketball Championship with an 81-53 victory over No. 8 seeded Lehman (5-21), Sunday afternoon at York College. The
Dolphins will face No.4 Baruch at 5:30 PM. on Wednesday evening at York College.
Staten Island struggled early in the contest and were unable to shake Lehman until the final minutes of the opening
half. The Lightning trailed just 19-17 with 9:30 as senior guard Erika Noriega (Lehman/Bronx, NY) connected on a three-point
goal to cap a 5-0 run for the Lightning. However, Staten Island answered with a 9-1 run to push the lead to 28-18 with 6:40 left.
Freshman guard Acasha Gordon (Curtis/Staten Island, NY) initiated the spurt with a three-point goal and sophomore forward
Kim Thompson (St. John Villa/ Staten Island, NY) came up with consecutive layups during the run. The Dolphins extended
their lead to 17 points, 37-20, with 2:55 remaining on a layup by Gordon.
"I knew it would be a tough physical game coming in,” said Staten Island head coach Marguerite Gualtieri, CUNYAC's
Coach of the Year. "When you get to the playoffs, players don't give up as easily, so it was a good start to the tournament for
us. We also did a better job in the second half moving the ball around and creating offense.”
Staten Island, who had five players in double-figures in scoring, put the game out of reach by scoring the first eight
points of the second half to widen their lead to 47-24. Senior guard Donna Przybyszewski (Port Richmond/Staten Island, NY)
paced the Dolphins with 16 points and added three steals. Thomspon finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Junior center Jacclyn Rock (New Dorp/Staten Island, NY) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
Depsite fouling out with six minutes remaining, Lehman freshman Shatasia Little (Grand Street Campus/Bronx, NY)
was able to score 18 points and grab 19 rebounds, both were game-highs. Melissa Escalera added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Baruch (14-12), the No. 4 seed knocked off No. 5 CCNY (11-14), 55-47, to advance to the semifinals of the 2004
CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's Basketball Championship. Baruch will face top-seeded Staten Island at 5:30 PM. on
Wednesday evening at York College.
Trailing 30-29 at halftime, CCNY guard AJ Figuero (Murry Bergtraum/Brooklyn, NY) connected on a jumper to give the
Beavers a 35-34 lead, their first advantage since the early stages of the game. However, Baruch responded with a big 10-2 run
to reclaim the lead at 44-37 with 10:51 remaining. CCNY was able to close within four points, 47-43, with 5:50 left on a basket
by sophomore forward Jolene Christopher (St. Vincent/Brooklyn, NY). But sophomore forward Jessenia Marrero (Francis
Lewis/Flushing, NY) responded by drilling a three-pointer from the left wing to give Baruch a seven point advantage with 4:10
left. CCNY junior guard Kim Neos (St. Mary's/Queens, NY) provided the Beavers with a glimmer of hope with a steal and layup
with 1:20 remaining to cut the lead to 50-45, but Bearcats freshman point guard Diane Ramirez (Francis Lewis/Sunnyside, NY)
converted two free throws to push the lead back to 52-45 with just thirty-one seconds remaining.
"When we went about three minutes without scoring at the end, I didn't get nervous,” said Baruch head coach Bob DiNardo.
"We have been down that road before, so it was nothing new to us. I was very confident to rely on our defense at that
point.”
CCNY jumped out to an early 12-7 advantage, but Baruch went on a 9-0 run to grab a 16-12 lead. The Bearcats
extended their lead to 22-14 with 7:29 remaining as Marrero and freshman guard Alexandra Stamatiades (William Bryant/
Queens, N Y) connected on back-to-back three-point field goals. But the Beavers were able to cut the lead to within just a
single point, 30-29, at the break. Marrero (3-for-6 three-pointers) and Stamatiades each scored 15 points to lead Baruch.
Stamatiades also added a team-high 10 rebounds and came up with three steals.
Clarice Bell led CCNY with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Neos added 10 points. North Division Foes John Jay and Hunter Set For Semifinals

Jamaica, NY- Third-seeded John Jay (17-8) defeated No. 6 York (9-15), 56-38, to advance to the semifinals of the 2004
CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's Basketball Championships. Making the school's first appearance in the semifinals since
1997, the Bloodhounds will face Hunter, the No. 2 seed on Wednesday at 7:30 PM. at York College.
John Jay put the game out of reach by holding York to just two points over the first 12:06 of the second half. York
freshman guard Kimberly Keene (Tilden/Brooklyn, NY)scored a basket with 16:00 remaining to bring the Cardinals within 29-
23. However, the Bloodhounds held York without a single point for the next 7:54 and built a 40-23 advantage in the process.
Senior guard December Bails (Frederick Douglas/Brooklyn, NY) scored 12 of John Jay's 14 points during the stretch and
finished with 18 in the second half.
York was within just two points, 19-17, with 4:35 remaining in the opening half, but the Bloodhounds went on a 7-0 run
to claim a 26-17 advantage with 2:27 remaining. Bails scored five straight points to cap the run. York junior guard Tashana
Watson (August Martin/Springfield Gardens, NY) scored the final four points of the stanza to bring the Cardinals to within 26-
21at the break.
Bails (7-for-11 field goals), who played all 40 minutes, scored a game-high 25 points and added five steals. Freshman
forward Michelle Wallace (Kennedy/Flushing, NY) added nine points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
"Cherith [Pointer, another John Jay senior] and I knew what we had to do at halftime,” said Bails, a two-time CUNYAC All-Star.
"We've been a second half team all year and I'm glad to be able to advance for the first time in my final year.”
Watson led York with 15 points and Keene finished with 14. The Cardinals shot just twenty-five percent from the floor (13-for-
52) and committed 31 turnovers.
#2 HUNTER 84, #7 MEDGAR EVERS, 45

Jamaica, NY - Second-seeded Hunter (16-10) defeated No.7 Medgar Evers (10-16), 84-45, to advance to the semifinals of the
2004 CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's Basketball Championships. The Hawks, who have reached the semifinal round for the
tenth straight season, will face No. 3 seeded John Jay on Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM. at York College.
The Hawks, who led 42-23 at halftime, put the game away early in the second half by scoring the first six points of the
stanza to grab a 48-23 advantage.
Hunter jumped out to a 17-9 first-half advantage as senior center Tania Blanco (Saint Catherine/Bronx, NY) and senior
forward Jen Agosto (Midwood/Brooklyn, NY) combined for 12 quick points. The Hawks extended their lead to 21-11 with 11:11
remaining in the half, before the Cougars would close to within 22-15 on a pair of free throws by junior forward Rannie Miles
(Prospect Heights/Brooklyn, NY) with 9:37 left. Hunter responded with an 11-0 run to take a 33-17 advantage with 3:13
remaining and outscored Medgar Evers, 9-6, the rest of the way to claim the 19-point halftime edge.
"Medgar Evers gave us a good fight in the first half, said Hunter head coach Jackee Meadow.
"Ultimately, our depth
wore them down. We're now going to prepare for the next challenge on Wednesday night.”
The Hawks shot a blazing fifty-three percent from the floor and were led by Agosto, who scored 17 points (8-for-11) field
goal attempts). Blanco added 13 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Jen Czirr (New Dorp/Staten Island, NY) contributed
a career-high 10 rebounds.
Miles and freshman forward Ursula Tesis (Sheepshead Bay/Brooklyn, NY) each scored 12 points and seven rebounds
to lead Medgar Evers.
