- The 2003 CUNY Athletic Conference Soccer Championship is set to begin on
Wednesday, October 29. Four quarterfinal games will be contested on Wednesday
with the winners meeting in the semifinals on Saturday, November 1 at the
College of Staten Island at 11:00 am and 1:00. The championship game will be
played at 1:00 on Saturday, November 8, also at the College of Staten
Island.
The College of Staten Island has earned the top seed in the
tournament after finishing unbeaten in the conference with a record of 7-0-1 and
will host Brooklyn College (6-7-0, 3-5-0 CUNY), the #8 seed at 1:00. The
Dolphins have enjoyed a terrific 12-1-2 overall record and are currently ranked
fourth in the region. CSI will showcase one of the stingiest defensive teams in
the country, having allowed just 10 goals this season behind sophomore keeper
Valon Osmani (Staten Island, NY), who has recorded a league-leading seven
shutout victories this season. Junior Asmir Dzemovski (Staten Island)
leads the league in goals (12) and points (26) and junior forward Marwan
Amer (New York, NY) has added seven tallies. Junior midfielder Joseph
Awadjie (Staten Island, NY) has scored a team-leading five goals for
Brooklyn, who lost to Staten Island, 2-0, last Wednesday at home. The Bridges
are second in the league in goals against average (1.76).
#2 seeded City College of New York (7-4-2, 5-2-1) will
host #7 seeded New York City College of Technology (3-6-2, 3-4-1) at 1:00
pm. City Tech upset City by a score of 3-1 on October 8 on the Beavers’ home
turf. Sophomore forward Emand Pellumbi (Bronx, NY) is second in the
league with 17 points (7 goals, 3 assists) and classmate Juan Gomez (New
York, NY) has added five goals this season. The Yellow Jackets went 0-5-1 in
their first six contests this season, but have rebounded to go 3-1-1 since.
Senior midfielder Marlon Reid (Jamaica, West Indies) leads City Tech with
4 goals this season.
#3 seeded John Jay (5-10-0, 4-4-0) will host #6 seeded
York (5-6-2, 3-3-2) at Riverbank Park at 3:30. The Bloodhounds defeated
York by a score of 5-0 in a home contest on October 14. John Jay has been
another resilient team this season, winning five of their last seven contests
after opening the campaign with eight straight defeats. Senior forward Jason
Bowery (Dix Hills, NY) leads John Jay with 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists)
and senior Fidelis Amoako (Accra, Ghana) has added 12 points (5 goals, 2
assists). York goalkeeper Damion Bhoorasingh (Jamaica, NY) is allowing
just 2.05 goals per game this season.
Defending CUNYAC champions Medgar Evers (7-6-4, 3-2-3)
will be the #4 seed and will host #5 seeded Hunter (3-10-3, 3-3-2) at
Brooklyn College at 1:30. Hunter tied Medgar, 0-0, on October 7. Medgar’s
Hugh Chin (Brooklyn, NY) has scored a team-leading seven goals and
sophomore Noel Waston (Brooklyn, NY) leads the conference in assists with
seven. Hunter has received an outstanding season from freshman keeper Ricardo
Mesquita (Bellrose, NY), who leads the league in saves at 8.31 per game.
Freshman forward Vojdan Rosoklija (Demarest, NJ) leads the Hawks with
five goals this season.
For the fifth straight year, the championship final will provide a vehicle
for the winner to advance to the NCAA Championships.
