#1 STATEN ISLAND DEFEATED #8 BROOKLYN, 2-1
The CSI Dolphins needed everything and then some to dispose of #8 seed Brooklyn
College in the Quarterfinal Round of the CUNYAC Soccer Championship Tournament,
2-1. The top-seeded Dolphins were a heavy favorite, having just beaten Brooklyn
eight days ago by a 2-0 count on the Brooklyn campus. But the visiting Bridges
showed absolutely no signs of backing down.
Just one minute into the game, Brooklyn
lined up its first powerful shot that goaltender Valon Osmani managed to block
away. Two minutes later, he wasn't as fortunate. A straight-away blast from
18-yards away by Brooklyn striker Gustalvo Concalves, put the Bridges on top
early 1-0. The play would bounce back-and-forth after that, with both teams
earning modest scoring chances. Thirty minutes into the contest tempers would
flare as four CSI and Brooklyn players were yellow-carded for pushing and
shoving. The episode seemed to fire up the Dolphins.
In a second half dominated by the top
seed, CSI finally exhaled a sigh of relief when in the 72nd minute, Asmir
Dzemovski found the net on a scramble in front of the Brooklyn goal to equalize
the game at 1-1. A striken Brooklyn team then made a fatal mistake nine minutes
later, leaving meidfielder Alberto Medina wide open on the right side. Medina
slid a beautiful lead-in pass to Dzemovski who calmly led a 2-on-1 break by
blasting home his second goal of the game, beating Brooklyn keeper Michael
Giordano. CSI's defense then took over, not allowing a single Brooklyn shot on
goal the rest of the way. Keeper Valon Osmani made 5 saves in the win, while
Giordano's 9 saves for the Bridges was not enough.
The top-seeded Dolphins will now brace for
their next contest, a semifinal meeting with #5 Hunter College, this Saturday,
at 11:00am. #2 CCNY & #3 John Jay will pair in the other semifinal at
1:00pm. Both games will be played at CSI. The Dolphins beat the Hawks in their
only regular season meeting, 3-2, in overtime.
#2 CCNY DEFEATED #7 CITY TECH, 2-1
CCNY (8-4-2) scored two goals in the final 18 minutes and was able to hold off pesky NY City College of Technology
(3-7-2), 2-1, at City College. CCNY freshman forward Vinceslas Colas (Brooklyn, NY) headed in a corner kick off
the foot of sophomore teammate Juan Gomez (Manhattan, NY) to stake the Beavers to a 1-0 lead at the 72 minute
mark. City made it 2-0 as sophomore defender Douey Wright tapped in a cross from Gomez with 5:53 remaining.
City Tech's Juan Manuel Alonso (Mexico City, Mexico) knocked in a rebound to make it 2-1 with 1:05 left, but the
Yellow Jackets were unable to get the equalizer.
#5 HUNTER DEFEATED #4 MEDGAR EVERS, 1-0
Hunter (4-11-3) upset the defending CUNY champions, Medgar Evers (7-7-4), 1-0, in Brooklyn and advanced to their
third straight CUNYAC semifinals. Hawks' freshman defender Guilherme Goncalves (Astoria, NY) scored the lone
goal in the 32nd minute after receiving a cross from junior midfielder Takuma Sugata (Sendai, Japan). Hawks' keeper
Dan Djura (Ridgewood, NY) made 3 saves to earn the victory.
#6 YORK DEFEATED #3 JOHN JAY, 0-0 (4-3 PENALTY KICKS)
York (6-6-2) sophomore goalkeeper Damion Bhoorasingh (Jamaica, Queens) made two spectacular saves in the
penalty kick session to help lead the #6 seeded Cardinals to the upset victory over #3 John Jay (5-11) at Riverbank.
The team's played 110 minutes of scoreless action before York was able to win
4-3 in penalty kicks. York shooters' Bhoorasingh, Marc Meo (Haiti), Mackenzie Bazil (Haiti), and Youssef Chapei (Morocco) all converted on their penalty
kicks. Bhoorasingh made 11 saves as John Jay outshot York, 20-11.
