CUNYAC / Hospital for Special Surgery Men's Volleyball - Quarterfinals

The Top Four Seeds Advance To The Semifinals
March 25th, 2003

Bronx, NY - The teams are set for the 2003 CUNY Athletic Conference / Hospital For Special Surgery Men's Volleyball Championship after today's quarterfinal matches at Lehman College in the Bronx. The Championship match will follow the two semifinal matches on Thursday night (starting at 5:00 pm), March 25th, at Lehman College. Admission to the games, as always, is free.

#1 hunter defeated #8 york 30-10, 30-11, 30-15
Senior setter Ray Bello (Bronx, NY) had 33 assists as the tournament's top seed, Hunter (24-4) swept #8 York, 30-10, 30-11, 30-15 in the CUNYAC / HSS Quarterfinals. Junior outside hitter Alfred Daos (Long Beach, NY) added 12 kills and junior middle hitter Michael McFalls (Woodside, NY) had 10 kills in the 15th consecutive victory over a CUNYAC opponent this season. York (1-19) was led by senior outside hitter Binchu John (Belrose, NY) with eight kills and eight digs.

#2 CCNY defeated #7 Baruch 30-27, 30-16, 32-30
Two-time CUNYAC Player of the Year Owen Niles (Brooklyn, NY) had 22 kills, ten digs and five blocks for CCNY (15-5), as the Beavers advanced to the semifinals on Thursday with a 30-27, 30-16, 32-30 win over #7 seed Baruch. Junior outside hitter Roger Cyrus (Brooklyn, NY) had a double-double with 14 kills and 14 blocks. A spirited effort by Baruch (3-13) was not enough to overcome a more experienced CCNY squad, despite 14 kills and four digs by senior outside hitter Craig Goldberg (Dix Hills, NY).

#3 MEDGAR EVERS defeated #6 CITY TECH 30-27, 30-26, 30-22
Having already achieved the most wins in the three-year career of the program with a 16-7 record, Medgar Evers won the school's first CUNYAC Tournament game with a 30-27, 30-26, 30-22 win over New York City College of Technology in the quarterfinal round. Sophomore outside hitter Andre Edwin (Grenada) had a tournament-high 24 kills to top the Cougars, while Junior outside hitter Irwin Pascal (Dominican Republic) added 16 kills and junior setter David Sealy (Barbados) had 24 assists. The Yellow Jackets (4-12) were led by junior setter/outside hitter Rohan Lewis (Barbados) with 13 assists, 12 kills and eight digs.

#4 LEHMAN DEFEATED #5 BROOKLYN 30-24, 32-30, 30-27
In the final match of the quarterfinal round, Lehman, the defending champions, beat Brooklyn, 30-24, 32-30, 30-27 to advance to Thursday's semifinals on their home court. The Lightning (11-12) received 16 kills from freshman middle hitter Rafael Vargas (Queens, NY), 18 kills and eight kills from junior outside hitter Wilmy Dipre (Bronx, NY) and ten kills and eight digs from senior outside hitter Ray Rivera (Bronx, NY). Brooklyn's (7-10) Adam Wysocki led the team with 10 kills and 23 digs.

#1 Hunter vs. #4 Lehman and #2 CCNY vs. #3 Medgar Evers - both at 5:00 pm
Followed by the CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH at 7:00 pm
