2003 CUNYAC Women's Volleyball Championships

City College Claims CUNYAC Women's Volleyball Championships;
Top Lehman 3-1


New York, NY -  Top-seeded City College defeated #2 Lehman, 3-1, to capture their first City University of New York Athletic Conference women’s volleyball championship since 1984, Thursday evening at City College.  The victory gave the Beavers an  automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships.  City reached the finals by defeating Baruch, 3-1, in the semifinals earlier in the evening while Lehman blanked York.  Tournament Most Valuable Player Erja Vettenranta (Jurva, Finland) recorded 12 kills and 15 digs in the semifinal victory over Baruch and added 27 kills and 20 digsin the championship match victory against Lehman. 

“This is very sweet for us because we have come so close so many times,” said City College head coach Robert Pichardo.  “Lehman played us extremely tough, but somehow are team was able to stay mentally strong.  Our whole starting line-up played great tonight.”

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

#1 CCNY DEFEATED #2 LEHMAN  30-25, 28-30, 30-28, 30-15
City led the entire way in the opening game and went on to a 30-25 win.  In game two, Lehman went on a 4-0 run to break a 20-20 deadlock and were able to hold on for the 30-28 win.  City took control of the match in the third game despite trailing for most of the way. The Beavers, down 25-22, went on a 6-0 run to go in front, 28-25, and held on for a 30-28 victory.  City jumped out to a 9-1 lead in game four and closed out the Lightning, 30-15.  Isabel Lorenzo led Lehman with 20 kills and Jaquelin Peralta added 17 kills for City.

SEMIFINALS

#1 CCNY DEFEATED #4  BARUCH          30-28, 30-24, 17-30, 30-19
Top-seeded CCNY (23-4) advanced to the finals by defeating #4 seeded Baruch  (16-17) in four  sets.  Freshman hitter Jacqueline Peralta (Manhattan, NY) recorded a match-high 14 kills and added 15 digs and junior  outside hitter Erja  Vettenranta (Jurva, Finland) added 12 kills and 15 digs for the Beavers.  Sophomore Latishea Pearson (St. Albans, NY) registered a team-high 13 kills and 14 digs and junior hitter Jennifer O’Connor (Middle Village, NY) added 12 kills for Baruch.

#2 LEHMAN DEFEATED #6 YORK                      30-16, 30-17, 30-22
Sophomore middle hitter Isabel Lorenzo (Bronx, NY)had a team-high 11 kills and added 6 digs to lead #2 seeded Lehman (19-6) into the CUNYAC finals with a three-game sweep of #6 seeded York.  Junior setter Esmeralda Camacho (Manhattan, NY) added 30 assists and 10 digs for the Lightning.   Sophmore middle hitter Adriana Miseje (Glen Cove, NY) had 9 kill andsenior hitter Sheryl Bawayan (Woodhaven, NY) added 16 digs for York (7-16).

Bronx, NY- CCNY junior outside hitter Erja Vettenranta was named CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Year, as voted by the CUNY Athletic Conference coaches last night. Vettenranta, a native of Jurva, Finland, averaged 4.05 kills and hit .367 from the floor this past season to help lead the Beavers to their first CUNYAC championship since 1984. Her teammate, freshman Jacquelin Peralta (Manhattan, NY) was named Rookie of the Year and Beavers’ head coach Robert Pichardo earned Coach of the Year honors.
