The final four is set for the 2003 CUNY Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball Championships
after today’s quarterfinal matches at City College of New York were completed. City College of New York, Lehman,
York, and Baruch all advanced to Thursday evening’s festivities. The Championship match will follow the two semifinal
matches (starting at 5:00 pm).
#1 CCNY DEFEATED #8 MEDGAR EVERS 30-16, 30-16, 30-9
Top-seeded CCNY (22-4) cruised past #8 seeded Medgar Evers (9-20) in three straight sets. Junior outside hitter
Erja Vettenranta compiled a match-high 12 kills and freshman hitter Jacqueline Peralta added 10 kills and a matchhigh
8 service aces to lead the Beavers. Junior middle hitter Tammy Chase led Medgar Evers with 6 kills and freshman
outside hitter Sofia Mathlin added a team-high 6 digs.
#2 LEHMAN DEFEATED #7 CITY TECH 30-10, 30-12, 30-20
Sophomore middle hitter Isabel Lorenzo recorded a match-high 11 kills and 8 digs to lead #2 seed Lehman (17-6) to
the straight set victory over #7 seed City Tech (4-10). Senior outside hitter Josenny Hidalgo and junior middle
blocker Shaunte Ruiz each added 6 kills, while junior setter Esmeraldo Camacho added a match-high 30 assists.
Junior outside hitter Ingrid Tiburcio led City Tech with 4 kills and 8 digs.
#6 YORK DEFEATED #3 HUNTER 32-30, 31-33, 30-27, 30-22
#6 seeded York (6-15) upset #3 seeded Hunter (13-24) in four sets. It was the first-ever quarterfinal defeat for
Hunter, who had won seven straight CUNY Championships. Sophomore middle hitter Adriana Miseje had a matchhigh
19 kills and 32 digs and senior setter Sheryl Bawayan recorded 40 assists and 19 digs. Senior setter Me Oak
Place led Hunter with 33 assists. “Yesterday was my birthday and all I wanted was a win against Hunter,” said York
head coach Andre Titus. “Tonight I received my gift.”
#4 BARUCH DEFEATED #5 JOHN JAY 30-13, 30-21, 30-14
Junior outside hitter Jennifer O’Connor had a match-high 22 kills and added 3 service aces as #4 Baruch (16-16)
swept #5 John Jay (9-14) in three straight sets. Junior middle blocker Sadis Sequeira added 18 digs and sophomore
Latishea Pearson added 9 kills and 9 digs. Senior outside hitter Kerri Koslosky added a team-high 9 kills and 8
digs for John Jay.
