Lou Pento

Player of The Week - Lou Pento, Baruch Sr., 6'2", F, Staten Island, NY

In his final semester, Pento, the 2000 CUNY Tournament MVP, stepped right back into form for the Statesmen, leading them to a 3-0 mark on the week. The graduate of New Dorp HS averaged 14.7 points, 19.3 rebounds and 6 assists a game in the trio, while shooting .567 from the floor (17-30). In an 11-point overtime win over Hunter, Pento had 15 points, 21 rebounds and 5 assists to become the first Baruch player to have back-to-back 20 rebound games (he had 20 against Mount St. Vincent).

Rookie of The Week - Edmund Scott, John Jay So., 6'3, F, Peekskill, NY

Scott led the Bloodhounds in scoring this week with 16.0 points and 5.7 rebounds, while shooting 17-30 from the floor, as Jay beat NYU, Stevens Tech and CCNY in succession. The first-year player from Peekskill HS had 25 points and six re-bounds in the CCNY win to lead all scorers. On the season the two-time Rookie of the Week is averaging 12.8 ppg and 5.3 rpg for the 'Hounds.

BARUCH 3-0 on the week
The Statesmen have averaged 82 points a game over their current 5- game winning streak and 79.5 over the last six since Christmas. Senior guard Ernie Cappello leads the balanced squad with 138 points (9.9 ppg), followed by junior guard John Alesi with 124 (10.3 ppg) and three younger big men: Shaun Applebaum (8.6 ppg), Joe Longobardi (8.4) and Sime Marnika (8.2).

BROOKLYN 1-1 on the week
The Bridges had two outstanding individual efforts this week from senior forward Clifford Brown, who averaged 27.5 points and 8.5 re-bounds in two games, shooting 16-28 from the field and 8-15 from the arc. Junior forward Shakespeare Thomas also had a stellar effort against St. Joseph's with 30 points and 11 rebounds. He followed that up with a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds) versus City Tech.

CCNY 0-2 on the week
The Beavers improved their lineup over the break with the addition of Edwin Caceras, a 6'2 junior guard from Queens, by way of St. Francis College. Caceras has averaged 15.3 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds over his first six games. A product of John Bowne HS, Caceras was an student assistant coach for CCNY last year.

HUNTER 1-2 on the week
The Hawks won a fast-paced decision over Lehman in the CUNY-TV men's game of the week. Two-time CUNYAC All-Star Darryl Munroe led Hunter with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Two days later, Munroe had another double-double against Baruch with 11 of each. Freshman slasher Tereek Frazier had 14 points in HC's loss at Connecticut College over the weekend.

JOHN JAY 3-0 on the week
The Bloodhounds have now won 10 of their last 12 and six of the last seven games since starting the season with a loss. Nine of their 13 games have been decided by five points or less and Jay is 7-2 in those contests. This week's CUNY-TV game against Lehman will put the winner in a strong position in the competitive North Division with a 3-1 intra-division record as they go cross-division for the next few games. Fresh-man guard Tim White led the 'Hounds with 18 points in the NYU win.

LEHMAN 1-1 on the week
The Lightning were led by their two outstanding rookies last week, Luis Chavez and Jeff White. Chavez led a balanced effort against Hunter with 12 points, followed by a 10-point effort against Centenary, while White had eight points against the Hawks and a game-high 21 points versus Centenary over the weekend.

MEDGAR EVERS 1-1 on the week
The Cougars lost a heartbreaker at home, 79-74 to South Division rival, Staten Island. Guards Jebah Clayton and Malik Copeland led the Cougars, with 22 and 20 points, respectively, as they drop to 1-2 in league play.

NY CITY TECH 1-1 on the week
It was a Jekyll-and-Hyde week for City Tech. Sophomore center Kwesi Joseph had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, against York. Two days later, guard Sam Deadwyler and Joseph both had double-doubles with 10 points and 13 rebounds, and 18 points and 11 rebounds respectively. Jeff Thomas led City Tech with 26 points.

STATEN ISLAND 1-0 on the week
Freshman Michael Stewart was spectacular in the Dolphins win at Medgar Evers. The freshman from Westinghouse HS in Brooklyn had 22 points and five rebounds, as CSI improved to 3-0 in the South Division. Senior forward David Paul chipped in with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

YORK 1-0 on the week
The Cardinals were led by guard Roberto Tapia, who had 21 points (shooting 4-6 from long distance) and forward Dwayne Uriri with 11 points and 7 rebounds in their 76-56 defeat of City Tech. Thirteen players scored for York.
