CUNYAC / CON EDISON NOTES
BARUCH 0-2 on the week
The Statesmen, CUNYAC's four-time defending North Division Champi-ons
are 0-2 to tip off the season after falling to SUNY-Farmingdale and
New York University, both on the road. Junior guard John Alesi (Xaverian/
Staten Island, NY) leads Ray Rankis' team with 13.5 points a
game...Baruch 's first six games this year are all non-conference.
BROOKLYN 1-1 on the week
The Bridges started out the season with mixed results: a 67-point win
over Berkeley College and a 28-point loss to Gwynedd Mercy in Pennsyl-vania.
Six players scored in double figures against Berkeley. Newcomer
Shakespeare Thomas (Midwood/Brooklyn, NY) leads the league in
scoring at 21.5 ppg.
CCNY 0-3 on the week
Success has not followed the Cinderella CCNY Beavers into the new
season, as the defending tournament champs have stumbled out of the
gate. Despite returning four starters, the Beavers finished in fourth place
at Ramapo's tip-off tournament last weekend. Sophomore center Obinna
Efobi (Stuyvesant/Queens, NY) was named All-Tournament after scor-ing
29 points in the pair.
HUNTER 0-2 on the week
A unanimous preseason all-star pick from the CUNYAC coaches, senior
forward Darryl Munroe (Lafayette/Brooklyn, NY) who scored 32 points
and pulled down 16 caroms in two games, was named to the All-Tourna-ment
team at Alvernia last week. Hawks freshman guard Tereek Frazier
(Tilden/Brooklyn, NY) was sharp against Jersey City with 15 points.
JOHN JAY 1-1 on the week
After coming up short in their season opener 60-56 to Rutgers-Camden,
the Bloodhounds gutted one out at the Doghouse, beating SUNY-New
Paltz, 79-68. The early play of junior forward David Myrie (All Hallows/
Queens, NY) has pleased third-year head coach Guy Rancourt. Myrie
averaged 9.0 points and 9.5 rebounds during that span.
LEHMAN 1-1 on the week
The Lightning were on the good end of a quadruple overtime game last
week, beating Utica College in the opening round of the SUNY-Utica/Rome
Tournament. Junior guard Jonathan Rojas (Walton/Bronx, NY) had 10
assists in the contest, as he begins to develop into a point guard for head
coach Steve Schulman.
MEDGAR EVERS 3-0 on the week
Three transfers have bolstered the Cougars program to a 3-0 start:
Guard Malik Copeland (Sullivan CC), guard Jebah Clayton (F.I.T.) and
center Khalil Nixon (Xavier University). Copeland notched a CUNY-high
31 points in the opener against Montclair State to earn MVP honors in the
MSU Tournament. Second year head coach Robert Holford's squad
topped Cortland State in the final the next day.
NY CITY TECH 0-3 on the week
The Yellow Jackets have struggled early on, losing two of their first
three by large margins, going into Monday's game with SUNY-Purchase.
One bright spot has been the play of sophomore center Kwesi Joseph
(Truman/Bronx, NY), who is tallying 16.3 ppg and 13.3 rebounds.
STATEN ISLAND 3-1 on the week
A team with high expectations this season, the Dolphins, like Medgar
Evers, opened up with a tip-off tournament win, beating New Jersey City
and their host Alvernia last weekend. CSI followed that with a win at
Farmingdale, before dropping their home opener to a hot-shooting
Manhattanville squad. Senior swingman Kassim Nesbitt (New Utrecht/
Brooklyn, NY) is second on the team with 13.8 points and 7.5 rebounds.
YORK 1-2 on the week
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were one of three CUNYAC teams to lose
both contests in early tournaments, despite the outstanding play of guard
Roberto Tapia (Campus Magnet/Queens, NY). The sophomore guard is
averaging 19.3 points for Ron St. John's team.
