CUNYAC / CON EDISON NOTES

BARUCH 2-0 on the week
The Statesmen are now at the .500 mark after starting the season 0-2, after beating Polytechnic and New Paltz State last week. Freshman center Sime Marnika has been a pleasant surprise for head coach Ray Rankis, scoring 21 points and grabbing 18 rebounds in the two games. The 6'7 product out of Archbishop Molloy only scored two points his entire senior season at the legendary high school in Queens.

BROOKLYN 2-1 on the week
A newcomer to the team, senior swingman Clifford Brown (Pacific/ Brooklyn, NY) had great game against local power NYU at BC's Roosevelt Gymnasium on Saturday, scoring 19 points. Unfortunately the Violets ruined a perfect week for the Bridges with a win in the final seconds. Junior forward Shakespeare Thomas (Midwood/Brooklyn, NY) averaged 14.7 points and 5.7 rebounds for the week.

CCNY 1-2 on the week
The defending champion Beavers have gotten off to a slow start, losing their first CUNY game, a 64-62 decision at the hands of Lehman, despite four three-pointers in the final 1:30 by senior guard Aki Trent (Colorado Springs/Mt. Vernon, NY). The 6'1 all-star was named to the Skidmore College All-Tournament team after netting 46 points and 9 rebounds.

HUNTER 1-0 on the week
Alongside Lorcan Precious, freshman guard Tereek Frazier (Tilden/ Brooklyn, NY) had an outstanding game against FDU-Madison, scoring 20 points in his first start of the season. The Hawks beat FDU for the first time since the 1965-66 season. The team will begin CUNYAC play this week with tilts against John Jay (Monday) and CCNY (Friday).

JOHN JAY 1-0 on the week
Three days after Hunter beat FDU-Madison in overtime, the Bloodhounds went one further at the Doghouse, beating the Devils, 87-85 in double OT, behind 31 points from senior forward Howard Hutchinson (Hillcrest/ Queens, NY). Hutchinson seemed to make every key shot down the stretch including two three-pointers in the second overtime, becoming the first player in Guy Rancourt's three season to score over 30 points.

LEHMAN 3-0 on the week
The Lightning started a great week, by beating CCNY at the APEX, 64- 62, in the first CUNY/Con Edison TV Game of the Week. Junior guard Jonathan Rojas (Walton/Bronx, NY) had 12 points and six assists in the contest. The team also welcomed back 6'5" junior forward Mike Patrick (Kennedy/Bronx, NY) who missed the first four games of the season. Patrick had 15 points and 7 rebounds in their win over Berkeley.

MEDGAR EVERS 2-1 on the week
The revived Cougars began the CUNY season with a 77-58 over York behind 24 points from sophomore Jebah Clayton (Robeson/Brooklyn, NY) and 17 points from junior Malik Copeland (Sullivan CC/Brooklyn, NY). After beating Westfield State (MA) in the opening round of Mount St. Mary's Tournament over the weekend, the 5-0 squad suffered their first loss of the season to the host school, 71-70.

NY CITY TECH 0-4 on the week
Besides falling to Staten Island in CUNY action, the young Yellow Jackets placed fourth at Mount St. Mary College's Tournament. Even though City Tech avoided Medgar Evers over the weekend, the two Brooklyn rivals will face off on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm at MEC.

STATEN ISLAND 2-0 on the week
Senior swingman Kassim Nesbitt (Brooklyn, NY) continued his hot play with 20 points and six assists in CSI's 88-82 win over Ramapo. The 6'2 product out of New Utrecht HS is second on CSI in points (14.3), second in assists (3.2) and third in rebounds (6.2).

YORK 1-1 on the week
The Cardinals rebounded from a CUNY loss to Medgar Evers on Wednesday with a 68-62 win over New Paltz State. Sharpshooting sophomore Roberto Tapia (Campus Magnet/Queens, NY) continues to pace the squad with a 16.4 points a game.
