David Paul

Player of The Week - David Paul, Staten Island Sr., 6'6", F, Brooklyn, NY

Paul continues to pour it on in his final campaign. Last week he led the Dolphins to a 2-0 mark with wins over Brooklyn and FDU-Madison. In only 17 minutes versus Brooklyn, the 2001 Player of the Year had 15 points. The Lafayette HS product followed that with 26 points and 16 rebounds in an overtime win over FDU. Paul leads CUNY in scoring at 19.7 ppg and ranks in the top five in rebounds (8.6), blocks (1.1) and field goal percentage (.627).

Rookie of The Week - Jeff White, Lehman Fr., 6'2, F, Yonkers, NY

A forward from Gorton High School in Yonkers, White had helped the Lightning get off to a 7-1 start this season. Last week, Lehman topped St. Joseph's (LI) in over-time and beat Baruch on the road to up their CUNY mark to 3-0. The 6'2 frosh had 18 points and seven rebounds against St. Joe's and 15 points against the States-men. On the year he's scoring 9.7 points for the Lightning going into the break.

CUNYAC / CON EDISON NOTES

BARUCH 1-1 on the week
Senior point guard Ernie Capello averaged 15 points (6-10 on three-pointers), 4.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds for the Statesmen, as they split their first two conference games of the season. Freshman Sime Marnika added 20 points in the win over John Jay.

BROOKLYN 0-1 on the week
The Bridges lost their only game last week, a 72-58 decision at Staten Island.Junior forward Shakespeare Thomas led BC with 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman forward Sean Wallace chipped in with 12 points and four boards.

CCNY 0-0 on the week
A week ago Sunday, the Beavers kicked off a stretch of six straight non-conference games against Centenary, notching their second win of the year. The defending champions hope to pick up where they left off on December 28th at nearby Mount St. Vincent.

HUNTER 0-1 on the week
As the holidays approach, Hunter senior forward Darryl Munroe is CUNYAC's active career scorer with 1334 points after netting 20 points in the Hawks' last game. He leads the #2 man on the list, his Lafayette High School teammate David Paul (Staten Island) by 11 points.

JOHN JAY 2-1 on the week
Two days after dropping their first CUNYAC game to Baruch, the Bloodhounds beat the College of New Jersey and NY Maritime to close out the first half of the season winning six of seven. Against Maritime, newcomers Pablo Palma and Tim White led a spirited comeback from 17 points down in the first half.

LEHMAN 2-0 on the week
Junior guard Jonathan Rojas (Walton/Bronx, NY) continued his strong play, closing out the semester with a 20-point effort (5-8 FG, 8-11 FG), with six assists and six rebounds as the Lightning improved to 7-1 with a win over Baruch on the road.

MEDGAR EVERS 0-1 on the week
In their only outing of the week, the Cougars let a seven-point halftime lead slip away to New Jersey City University on the road. There were 10 ties or lead changes in the second half alone in the contest. Sophomore forward Jebah Clayton led MEC with 16 points.

NY CITY TECH 0-1 on the week
Sophomore center Kwesi Joseph (Truman/Bronx, NY) had another outstanding performance for the Yellow Jackets, shooting 8-14 from the field and 4-6 from the charity stripe for 20 points. He also grabbed 8 rebounds in their only game against FDU-Madison.

STATEN ISLAND 2-0 on the week
The Dolphins have opened up the season 9-1 for the first time since 1983-84, when head coach Tony Petosa was a freshman at the old Sunnyside campus. CSI started 16-1 that year before finishing at 25-4. On the week, freshman Michael Stewart averaged 8.5 points.

YORK 1-0 on the week
Junior center Quincy Oudkerk (Jamaica HS), a preseason all-star pick by the CUNY coaches, led the Cardinals to a 63-57 win on the road at Rutgers-Newark last week with 17 points (including 9-11 FT shooting) and four rebounds.

CUNYAC Men Over .500 in Non-Conference Games

A definite sign of improved play from CUNYAC schools this season is a 33-31 (.516) mark versus outside competition. Last season CUNYAC was 48-66 in non-league games (.421). Here's how CUNY matches up with other conferences as of 12/17/01:
