Player of The Week - Owen Niles, CCNY JR, 6'3, MB, Queens, NY
The back-to-back CUNY Player of the Year
put his Beavers in a position to claim the
regular season title with his performances
in the straight set wins over Lehman and
Hunter last week. Niles (St. George, Barbados)
pounded 14 kills apiece while
adding an average of 8 digs and 7.5
blocks in the two wins to put the Beavers
alone in first place. Niles leads the team
with a .662 hitting percentage, as CCNY
has won five straight after dropping New
Jersey City on the road and have moved
into a 14th place tie in the AVCA Division
III national poll.
Rookie of The Week - Alejandro Flores, Lehman Fr, 6'7, MH, Moca, Dominican Rep.
After 15 straight victories and a #10 national
ranking, the Lightning dropped one
at CCNY as Flores starred nevertheless.
The 6'7 opposite hitter led Lehman to a
1-1 week with 42 kills, 13 assists, six solo
blocks and five digs. The powerful hitter
collected 18 kills in the straight set loss to
CCNY, but his team bounced back to
knock off Stevens Tech on the road in three
straight as Flores netted 24 kills in 32 at-tempts.

LEHMAN & CCNY RANKED IN AVCA POLL
Three CUNY schools received votes in the February 26th AVCA
Division III Coaches Poll, with Lehman slotted in 10th as the first NECVA
school on the list, followed by CCNY in 14th and Hunter in 17th place.
The new poll and stats will be released on Tuesday, March 5th.

NEWS FROM AROUND CUNY...
Baruch knocked off York at home in five tough games to remain in the 6th
spot overall. Senior hitter Ioannis Michaelides paced the Statesmen with
11 kills, 13 digs and 26 assists. Baruch is expected to test out their new
facility before the end of the month with the dedication ceremony taking
place on Tuesday, March 19th...
The young Brooklyn Bridges dropped
two more contests last week to extend the current mark to six straight
without a victory. Sophomore Adam Wysocki tallied 30 kills, 16 digs and 3
service aces for the week while freshman Genri Privalov adding 31 kills
and 8 digs for the week...The hard-hitting duo of Owen Niles and Sebastian
Hoffman has paced the Beavers to three more wins with Hoffman collecting
41 kills, 22 digs and 20 solo blocks.
With the return of Michael
McFalls, Danile Torma, Welmer Magtoto and Roger Cyrus, the Beavers
look solid for the stretch run. Their straight set win over Lehman gives
them the tie-breaking edge for the regular season title should they both
win the rest of their CUNY contests...
The Hawks went 2-2 for the week
with both losses coming against nationally ranked opposition, in CCNY
and Roger Williams. Senior Justin Stack paced Hunter with 64 kills and 85
digs for the week while 6'4 rookie Alan Seymour added 25 kills...The
Bloodhounds went the distance for the first time this year in ousting
Brooklyn. Igor Meystelman paced John Jay with 19 kills, seven digs and
five blocks with Andre Patnet adding 11 smashes of his own...
The Lightning
bounced back from their loss at CCNY to knock off nationally ranked
Stevens Tech in three straight. Alejandro Flores nailed 24 shots to the
floor while Max Valerio and Troy Jimenez added nine apiece...The Cougars
have evened their record at 7-7 overall with their third straight win
in CUNY action over York...
City Tech has managed to defeat each of the
teams below them in the standings to remain in 4th as they beat Baruch in
the most recent encounter. Sophomore Eder Mathelier had 24 kills and 32
digs in the contests with Zhou Jun Luo chipping in with 17 smashes and
34 pick-ups...York has lost three in a row with senior Binchu John being
a bright spot. The outside hitter netted nine kills, 10 digs and eight assists
in the loss at Medgar Evers.
CUNY'S DOMINATE NCAA STATISTICS
According to last week's NCAA stats, CUNY athletes currently hold 17
top five spots in the six individual categories- including three #1's: Hitting
Perecntage (Troy Jimenez, Lehman), Blocking (Owen Niles, CCNY)
and Service Aces (Daniel Torma, CCNY).
