CUNYAC Women's Basketball - December 10, 2001
Player of The Week - Chanel Kendall, Lehman So., 5'10", F, Brooklyn, NY
The 2001 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year,
Kendall, led the Lightning to two CUNYAC
victories last week. Overall, the team was
2-2, but the sophomore from F.D.R. High
had 50 points and 26 rebounds against
NCAA participants NYU and Cabrini. In the
league games, she averaged 24.5 points,
13 boards, 8 assists and 6 steals. Kendall
also leads CUNYAC in scoring at a 23.6
clip.
Rookie of The Week - Tushana Watson, York Fr., 5'5", G , Queens, NY
Three weekly awards, three wins for
Watson. A freshman from August Martin
HS, she had three solid efforts in the Cardinals
2-1 week, leading the way in wins
over Brooklyn and New Rochelle. In the
pair of wins, the freshman guard averaged
26 points and 9.5 caroms. In the sole loss,
to Ramapo (9-1), she had 15 points, 6
steals and five boards. On the year,
Watson's scoring 20.3 points a game, for
third in CUNYAC.

CUNYAC / CON EDISON NOTES
BARUCH 1-2 on the week
Guard Stephanie Trahan (Roxbury Central/Inwood, NY), has had a
strong first year in CUNY so far. In three games last week, the 5'3 junior
averaged 20.3 ppg, 5.7 rebounds and four assists. Against Lehman and
Purchase, the Stateswoman guard was also 11-21 from 3-point range,
before coming back to Earth with an 0-6 night against Old Westbury.
BROOKLYN 0-3 on the week
Bridges' senior guard Katima Emptage (New Dorp HS) continues to
pace the squad with 27 points in last weeks' games. Against Skyline
conference foe, Stevens Tech the native Staten Islander grabbed 18
rebounds.
CCNY 1-1 on the week
CUNYAC's 1999-2000 Player of the Year, Lauren Cargill (Cardozo/Valley
Stream, NY) had strong week, shooting 50% from the floor in the
Lady Beavers two games, scoring 28 and 20 points respectively, while
averaging 9 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 4.5 steals.
HUNTER 2-0 on the week
The Hawks started their usual run through the league, beating John Jay
and CCNY to move to 2-0. Senior forward Shevon Collins (Canarsie/
Brooklyn, NY) had 17 points, 7 boards and 6 assists in the CCNY win at
the school's homecoming.
JOHN JAY 2-1 on the week
Sophomore forward Cherith Pointer (Brooklyn, NY) had with 22 points
and 20 rebounds in the Bloodhounds win over St, Elizabeth on Saturday.
The Midwood alum pulled down a total of 42 rebounds in the three
games.
LEHMAN 2-2 on the week
The Lightning had a down and up week to say the least. After losing to
Nationally ranked NYU, they topped Baruch and City Tech in CUNY action,
before falling to Cabrini on Saturday. Freshman center Christina
Calderon (Spellman/Bronx, NY) had her best game of the year against
NYU, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 boards.
MEDGAR EVERS 2-1 on the week
Athletic Director and women's basketball coach Roy Anderson hosted
the Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Tournament over the weekend, but
the Lady Cougars fell short in their bid to finally win their own tournament.
Yeshiva came from behind in the final minute to win the champion-ship
game 71-66. Junior guard Giselle Lake (Wingate/Brooklyn, NY) had
28 points and 11 steals against Purchase and sophomore center Keisha
Toms (Seattle, WA) scored 24 points in the Yeshiva game.
NY CITY TECH 0-2 on the week
City Tech junior center Iasha Pryor continues to lead the Yellow Jackets
as they search for their first win. The Brooklynite is averaging 10.8 points
and 8 rebounds a game.
STATEN ISLAND 2-0 on the week
The Dolphins, the two-time defending tournament champions, sport
CUNYAC's best overall mark at 5-2. Junior forward Keisha Cook pulled
down 26 rebounds in an easy victory over Centenary to start the week.
The New Dorp HS alum is now 2nd in CUNYAC with a 15.3 clip. She also
averaged 20 points for the week. Her high school teammate, sophomore
Jacclyn Rock had her best game in her first season with the squad,
scoring 21 points (on 8-11 FG and 5-5 FT shooting) versus St. Joseph's.
YORK 2-1 on the week
Freshman Tushana Watson is currently responsible for 40 percent of
York's offense. The Queens guard is the only Cardinal scoring in double
digits. She also tops the young squad in rebounding (8.6), steals (4.1),
assists (1.4), field goal percent (.480), 3-point percent (.400) and free
throw percent (.693).
