Player of The Week

Jezel Rodriguez, Hunter - Jr., S, Bronx, NY
A two-time CUNYAC All-Star, Rodriguez is proving her versatility with a move to the setter position for the two-time defending titlists. With a pair of wins over the weekend against Medgar Evers and John Jay, the Hawks raised their CUNYAC winning streak to 59 consecutive matches. In 20 games of action so far, the Clinton HS alumna has compiled 20 kills, 141 assists, 53 digs and 37 aces.

Rookie of The Week

Andi Zhao, John Jay - Fr., OH, Brooklyn, NY
Zhao, a freshman from Lafayette HS made an impressive debut for the Bloodhounds, leading the team to a 1-2 opening record. In 11 games this season, the hitter has 30 kills, 12 digs and five blocks. Although Jay fell to the top two conference teams from last season this past Saturday (Hunter and Lehman), they beat St. Joseph's (LI) earlier in the week.

HUNTER TAKES TWO AT ONEONTA TOURNAMENT
CUNYAC defending champion Hunter started off the 2001 campaign with a seventh-place finish at Oneonta's Invitational over Labor Day weekend. In four matches, the Hawks went 2-2 and had strong performances from MH Annette Mpinja (Peoria, AZ) with 46 kills and 8 blocks while senior Nora Wnuk (New York, NY) had 42 kills, 57 digs and 12 aces.
CUNYAC MULTI-MATCH DAY
On Saturday, each CUNYAC women's volleyball team kicked off their 2001 Conference season with a pair of matches at Lehman College. Here are the results in brief.

Baruch defeated York 30-26, 32-30, 30-25
Baruch's junior setter Jeanette Espinoza (New York, NY) led the Stateswomen with 17 assists and 5 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Jennifer Quiones (Brooklyn, NY) added 9 kills. York's sophomore OH/S Sheryl Bawayan (Queens, NY) led the Cardinals with 7 kills and 6 assists and 11 aces.
CCNY defeated NY City Tech 30-0, 30-0, 30-17
CCNY's freshman outside hitter Erja Vettenlanta (New York, NY) led the team with 3 kills, 4 aces and 3 digs, while freshman outside hitter Catherine Martinez (Bronx, NY) added 3 kills, 3 digs.
Hunter defeated Medgar Evers 30-16, 30-14, 30-10
Hunter's junior setter Jezel Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) led the Hawks with 11 assists and 10 aces, while senior middle hitter Nora Wnuk added 6 kills and 4 aces. Medgar Evers' sophomore setter Crystal Noel (Brooklyn, NY) led the Cougars with 3 kills and 8 assists.
Lehman defeated John Jay 25-30, 30-14, 30-27, 30-24
Lehman's junior outside hitter Madelayne Garcia (Bronx, NY) led the Lightning with 15 kills and 11 digs and 3 aces, while freshman setter Esmerelda Camacho (New York, NY) added 26 assists, 11 digs and 4 kills. John Jay's senior setter Isorys Dilone (Brooklyn, NY) led the Bloodhounds with 18 assists, while freshman outside hitter Andi Zhao (Brooklyn, NY) added 12 kills and 7 digs.
Baruch defeated Staten Island 30-26, 30-26, 30-12
Baruch's setter Jeanette Espinoza (New York, NY) led the way with 7 assists, 10 aces and 4 digs, while freshman OH Sadis Sequeira (Bronx, NY) had 5 kills and 4 digs. CSI's freshman setter Kim Rutter (Queens, NY) led the Dolphins with 9 kills, 9 assists, 9 aces and 29 digs.
York defeated NY City Tech 30-19, 30-23, 18-30, 30-13
York's sophomore OH/S Sheryl Bawayan (Queens, NY) led the Cardinals with 8 assists, 5 kills and 4 aces, while sophomore MH Dakota Duncan (Jamaica, NY) had 6 kills and 4 aces. City Tech's senior setter Sandy Kouw (New York, NY) led the Yellow Jackets with 5 assists and 3 aces.
CCNY defeated Lehman 30-26, 30-27, 30-15
CCNY's freshman outside hitter Erja Vettenlanta (New York, NY) led the team with 10 kills, 16 digs, 5 aces and 5 blocks, while freshman outside hitter Catherine Martinez (Bronx, NY) added 10 kills, 10 digs and 3 aces. Lehman's junior setter Sakeena Esteves (Bronx, NY) led the Lightning with 8 assists, 5 kills and 3 digs.
