CUNYAC / Sprint PCS notes

HOUNDS START OF CUNYAC PLAY WITH SWEEP OF STATESMEN

Senior Kevin Kozub (1-1) threw a complete game, one-hit, shutout and struck out seven to lead John Jay to a 11-0 win over Baruch in the nightcap of a doubleheader. Moises Walters went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Steve Vera was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases in the win. In the opening game, freshman Kevin Anza got the first win of his college career with a 16-2 complete victory. Miguel Jaquez went 2- for-3 with three runs scored, Mike Ramirez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Cory Johnson was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Bloodhounds.

With the second win, John Jay equaled the school's win total from the last two seasons (3), in only five games into the tenure of new head coach Dan Palumbo. Before the school's home opener, Palumbo and Athletic Director Susan Larkin had a short ceremony for former coach Lou DeMartino, who led the 'Hounds for 27 seasons. DeMartino passed away on February 1st, at the age of 62. The squad will wear the #35 on their sleeve this season in memory of Coach Lou.

CUNY RESULTS...

CSI Wins Two. CSI swept Mt. St. Mary in a big Knickerbocker Conference doubleheader. The Dolphins sent sophomore AJ Parrino to the hill in game one and he turned in 5 1/3 innings of shutout, 2 hit ball. Senior Mike Guarneri drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. In game two, newcomer Nick Secchini took the mound and was impressive to say the least in his Dolphin debut. Secchini took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but fell just short of the no-hit bid when a bloop single by Trevor Purcell found its' way to the outfield grass. Secchini came right back and retired the next two batters to earn his first victory of the season. The Dolphins move to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Knickerbocker Conference.

Baruch Drops Two. Steven Vazquez pitched a seven-inning complete game for Baruch in the first game of a doubleheader, but Stevens Tech prevailed, 3-1. Vazquez gave up no earned runs while teammate Kevin Clark went 3-for-4. In game two, Stevens beat Baruch, 11-3. Clark was 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
