CUNYAC / BRINE notes
BARUCH 1-1 on the week
After an 0-2 start, new head coach Bobby Francis won his first game, as the Statesmen beat City Tech, 1-0 as senior keeper Luis Kijner (Ecuador) had his first shutout of the year. Freshman Bimal Thapa (New York, NY) was sharp on defense for Baruch.
BROOKLYN 0-2 on the week
Conversely, Antonio Superbia is still searching for the Bridges first victory, as he looks to revitalize the B.C. program. He may get it today, with a match against SUNY Purchase tips off a week of non-conference games.
CCNY 2-0 on the week
The Beavers received surprising scoring from junior midfielder Gary Byrne, a transfer from Huntington College in Alabama. Byrne netted his first three goals of the year and had two assists to up his season total to five, as the Beavers are streaking. They have won 11 straight regular season CUNY soccer matches, dating back to the start of last season. City faces York in a battle of unbeatens on Saturday as they look to avenge last year's semifinal loss.
HUNTER 0-1 on the week
The fledgling Hawks are still winless on the young season after falling to St. Joseph's-Patchogue, 5-0 last week. They have three games on the slate for this week.
JOHN JAY 1-1 on the week
The Bloodhounds had an up and down week, after topping SUNY Maritime 3-1 on Monday, Jay dropped a 5-1 decision to York. In the pair, 5'10 sophomore forward Jason Bowrey (Wheatley Heights HS) had a goal and an assist.
MEDGAR EVERS 0-2 on the week
The Cougars are averaging only 0.44 goals on offense through their first nine contests. Veteran coach Stanley Harmon hopes the team will reverse that trend when they play Baruch on Saturday.
NY CITY TECH 0-1 on the week
Despite five saves from goalkeeper Nahum Diego Ramos, the Yellow Jackets lost their only match last week, a 1-0 decision to Baruch. City Tech has two non-conference matches this week, before a matchup with John Jay on Saturday.
STATEN ISLAND 1-1 on the week
Welcome Back Igor! After a successful men's tennis season last spring, senior Igor Ogoula (Staten Island, NY) finally made his return to the soccer squad by scoring twice in the Dolphins 2-0 win over Medgar Evers. CSI is also 2-0 in league play with Hunter scheduled for Saturday.
YORK 2-1 on the week
Midfielder Kevin Lee (Jamaica) had another strong week, scoring two goals as the Cardinals remained undefeated in CUNYAC play (3-0), as they prepare for a Saturday rematch of the 2000 Tournament semifinals versus CCNY, when they ousted the Beavers 1-0.
