CUNYAC / BRINE notes

COACHING CHANGE AT HUNTER
Second year Hunter coach John Benintendo resigned last week as head coach of the Hawks. The retired NYPD officer compiled a 3-22-2 mark over the past one and a half years. Assistant coach Salvador Briones will be the interim coach for the remainder of the season. Briones, a Hunter alum won two CUNYAC titles as a midfielder in 1995 and as a student assistant coach in 1999, when the Hawks advanced to the NCAA's.

BARUCH 0-2 on the week
The Statesmen have dropped four straight games, despite strong play from junior midfielder Rachid Chergui and freshman defender Dwayne Campbell. Coincidentally, both players are from Queens.

BROOKLYN 1-1 on the week
The Bridges split a pair of one-goal games, beating Baruch 2-1 and losing to Staten Island, 3-2. Freshman forward Joseph Awadije, a freshman from Liberia had an assist in Brooklyn's loss to CSI.

CCNY 1-1 on the week
Beavers junior forward Gerhard Sarkodie stepped back into the starting lineup last week, replacing injured 2000 Player of the Year Ivan Popov, and scored two goals in a 6-0 shutout over City Tech on Saturday. Rookie midfielder Santiago Helman also had a goal in the contest.

HUNTER 1-1 on the week
The Hawks offense is finally coming around under Briones, as they won their second Conference match last week, defeating Medgar Evers, 2-1 after starting out the week being shutout at York. Sophomore forward Tomasz Maziarz had one goal and freshman midfielder Jason Chin scored the second, a game-winner in the 87th minute.

JOHN JAY 1-1 on the week
Bloodhound goal keeper German Rojas, a Brooklynite from Lafayette HS had a solid week, getting shutout against Baruch and saving 19 shots in the two contests. He now has 91 saves and three shutouts on the season.

MEDGAR EVERS 1-1 on the week
Freshman forward Thomas Nelson scored a pair of goals in the Cougars 4-0 shutout over City Tech early in the week. Daniel Harris also had a tally and an assist in their 2-1 loss to Hunter on Saturday.

NY CITY TECH 0-2 on the week
The Yellow Jackets were shutout in both of their conference matches this week, dropping City Tech to 1-6-1 on the season.

STATEN ISLAND 2-0 on the week
An all-star last season, Daniel Aragon, a 5-6 senior forward, scored two goals this week, as the Dolphins raised their CUNYAC mark to 4-1 with wins over John Jay and Brooklyn. Freshman midfielder Marwan Amer notched a goal and assist this week as well. A Wednesday win at York (4:00 pm) can put CSI into a three-way tie for first place.

YORK 1-0 on the week
GK Stephane Koutou stepped out of the box to score the first goal on a penalty kick in the Cardinals 2-0 shutout over surging Hunter last Wednesday. In the CUNYAC driver's seat now at 5-0, the Cardinals can win the Regular Season title with wins this week over Staten Island and Medgar Evers.
