CUNYAC Women's Softball - April 01, 2002

Player of The Week - Jaclyn Scimone, CSI Sr, 3B, Staten Island, NY

Scimone, a four-year starter at the hot corner for Staten Island, had a hot bat, hitting 9-21 (.429), leading the Dolphins to a 4-4 mark. CSI started the week with a double-header vs. NY City Tech, in which the Tottenville HS alum was 4-5 with three RBIs. Then on a six-game trip to Orlando, Florida she went 4-7 with two RBIs in a sweep of SUNY-Farmindale.

Pitcher of The Week - Theresa Caputo, CSI So, P, Staten Island, NY

Against NY City Tech Caputo, an all-star last season, threw a 5-inning no-hitter, striking out ten in the process. Then on the team's Florida trip, she threw three consecutive days, getting one win in 18.1 innings. The Curtis HS graduate yielded 9 earned runs while getting 16 K's (including 12 vs. Farmingdale). The rightly now boasts a 3.33 ERA in nine games.

Rookie of The Week - Jessica Terrusa, Baruch Fr, 3B/SS, Staten Island, NY

Another Staten Island HS player (St. John Villa) gets the third award of the week. In a doubleheader sweep over York, the rookie went 7-11 at the plate with two home runs, eight runs scored and ten runs batted in. So far this year, the Stateswoman is hit-ting .471 and slugging at an 88% clip.

CUNY Action....

Lehman Sweeps Medgar Evers. Tara Dempsey went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and Cira Garcia was 3-for-4 with two RBIs as Lehman topped Medgar Evers, 22-8, in the opener. Lehman won the nightcap, 33- 10, as Stephanie Rodriguez went 5-for-6 with eight RBIs and four runs scored, and her twin sister, Monica, was 4-for-6, with seven RBIs and three runs scored. Pitcher Josenny Hidalgo won both games for Leh-man. Medgar Evers is 0-3, 0-2.

Baruch Drops York. Baruch swept York, 16-2 and 27-18, in a CUNY doubleheader. Jennette Tavarez had a double, triple and home run, and Stacyann Stewart homered and tripled for York.

Hunter Splits. Shevon Collins went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Vana Loukissas had an RBI on a suicide squeeze for Hunter in a 6-1 win over Centenary at the Snowbird Invitational in South Carolina. Hunter lost the nightcap to SUNY-Oswego, 2-0.

Lehman Drops Two. Erika Noriega had three singles and two RBIs and Tara Dempsey had two singles and two RBIs for Lehman in a 12-9 loss in the second game of a doubleheader. St. Joseph's won the first game, 9-1.

Hunter Splits Again. Shevon Collins went 2-for-2 with two walks and four runs for Hunter in the Snowbird Invitational in South Carolina. Samantha Grabkowitz was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer for Hunter in a 15-3 win over Oberlin. The next day freshman Cynthia Cabrera threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts for Hunter in a 3-1 victory over Villa Julie. Hunter lost the another game to Felician, 9-0 at the Snowbird Invitational in South Carolina.

CSI Sweeps. In game one, College of Staten Island beat New York City Tech, 9-0, as sophomore Theresa Caputo pitched a five-inning no-hitter. Caputo struck out 10 and also hit a home run. CSI won, 10-3, in game two, as Julie Lowe went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. CSI is 9-1, 6-0 CUNY.
