2002 CUNY Indoor Track & Field Championship @ The Armory Lehman women & CCNY Men Capture 7th Annual CUNY Indoors

New York, NY - The Lehman College women's indoor track squad continued to dominate the CUNY Championships with their third straight title while the CCNY men captured their first ever crown at the Armory in Manhattan.

Lehman used their balance to come away with the team trophy as stalwarts Paulette Baldwin, Danielle Howard and Alicia Watson won two golds apiece in giving the Lightning (163 pts.) a comfortable 53-point margin of victory over second-place York (110). Hunter took third with 80 points thanks in large part to tournament most valuable performer Donna Mahoney's three gold and one silver medal. But the day belonged to coach Lesleigh Hogg and his troops, including 55-meter hurdling record setter Baldwin (8.27 seconds) and weight throw champ Howard (12.84m).

"The hard work and dedication paid off once again," said coach Hogg of his team's victory. "We had some women swim [Sunday] morning at the Metropolitan Champs and then made it to this meet, so with that kind of dedication one can only be successful. Hopefully we can maintain that desire for the outdoors."

Several other CUNY marks fell on the day as the Hunter women got the ball rolling with a distance medley relay record time of 14:01.84, followed by Lehman's Watson who bettered the 55 meter dash mark in time of 7.34 seconds. York's Shakima Thomas knocked the 800 meter mark with 2:23.96 while also playing a part in the 4x400 relay record of 3:57.44 as they outdueled Lehman in a photo finish. Both teams provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoors.

The men's title went to CCNY despite just two individual event wins for the Beavers, who were conference indoor runners-up on two previous occasions. David Linton nailed the 55 meter hurdle gold for the second straight year while Charles Sands won the triple jump for CCNY, while the Beavers were all over the scoreboard in most events and earned 74 team points, good enough for 1st place.

"We just came together as a team at the right time," said CCNY head coach Leroy Solomon. "I am going to enjoy this win, but we are not going to rest as we will add some runners and be ready to compete again outdoors."

York's Khari White was the outstanding male performer on the day with victories in the 1,500m, 5,000m, and the distance medley relay where his York contingent set a new meet record in 11:15.21. Teammate O'Neil Smiley also grabbed three golds. White, Smiley and his teammates captured silver in the 4x400 relay where NY City Tech came away with a surprise gold and a new meet record. The additional victory by Holiness Mothersill in the long jump carried the Yellow Jackets to a second place team finish with 63 points as Medgar Evers placed third (55). York and Hunter, while getting strong individual efforts, did not have the required participant numbers to score as a team.
