*Security Alert*

On Wednesday, October 19th, at approximately 4:30PM, a man identifying himself as a "Law Enforcement Official" accosted a York College student. This incident occurred approximately two to three miles from York College's main campus, on the service road to the Van Wyck Expressway. The student was forced into a van and handcuffed. As the van sped off, the student managed to kick the van door open and escape. The suspect is described as a male black, 6'2" tall, wearing dark blue clothing and a blue baseball cap with "Fugitive Enforcement" written across the front.

Members of all college campus communities are implored to take extra care in their personal travels to and from campus. Please be responsible for your own personal security when away from the campus. Listed below are some guidelines for safe travel:

  1. Travel with a group of people familiar to you.

  2. Travel in high traffic, well-lit areas of the street.

  3. Do not stop to engage in conversations with strangers en route to your destination.

  4. All thefts or suspected thefts or criminal activity around the campus should be reported to the Public Safety Office immediately, as well as local authorities.

  5. If you encounter any act of theft, or harassment, do not expose yourself to harm. Commit the identity/description to memory, all them to leave and report the incident immediately.

Lehman College's "Escort Program" provides escorts by Public Safety personnel to campus parking lots and the vicinity, Bedford Park Blvd., Jerome Avenue and Kingsbridge, subway stations after evening classes for students, staff and faculty members who request them when sufficient Public Safety personnel are available. Request should be made about twenty or thirty minutes before an escort is needed.

Please help us help you by following these suggestions. Additionally, security works best collectively, whether it involves you or your fellow co-workers or classmate. If you "SEE IT, REPORT IT" @ Gate #5, Central Communication Station, (718) 960-8228 or 7777. We are working to resolve all security issues in and around the campus.

If you have any questions regarding the above subject matter, please contact the Public Safety Office, APEX Bldg., 109, (718) 960-8593.
