Communicat Center

Gate Five – Goulden Avenue
FxFowle

2003

On the western side of Lehman College’s campus is an open entrance flanked by a stainless steel, cylindrical building. This is the College's Communications Center, headquarters for its 24-hour life, safety and security systems. The structure is one-story with wrap-around windows and below grade security features tied to campus systems. Its nautilus-shape offers a visual break from the metal fencing that marks the campus perimeter, creating a welcoming entrance to the College.

Next to the Communications Center is a golden hued, free-standing limestone wall topped with a sculpted owl—symbolizing wisdom.  FxFowle Architects designed the entrance structures at Gate Five to harmonize with both the stonework of the nearby Gillet Hall, and the glass and steel of the opposite Art Gallery. The entranceway at Gate Five leads directly to the plaza and walkway installation, Intersections, created by artist Wopo Holup.
