Two colorful columns with terra cotta tiles welcome the students and teachers at P.S. 37. A swirl of flowers and endlessly crawling vines are punctuated with butterflies and birds which appear among the leaves. Butterflies, including cocoons to caterpillars, are shown in different stages to symbolize growth and the natural process. A belief that the discovery of the Americas was the discovery of paradise underlies much of Rodríguez's work. In these columns there is an allusion to the lush beauty of the Americas. Walking through the portal of the two columns, a guitar shape is designed into the granite paving. Its lines are echoed in the curves of the ceiling.
