David Saunders' Firehat, positioned on the southwest corner of the firehouse for Engine Company 41, Ladder Company 5 and Search Light Unit, is a relief sculpture. A half-inch aluminum line defines the contour of a firehat placed against a fireman's shield. Reflecting the sunlight, this metal drawing casts a bold linear shadow on the wall. Firehat serves not only as a sign announcing the purpose of the building, it also is an homage to the daily work of a firefighter.
