In 1973 the newly formed Health and Hospitals Corporation, working with an art advisory board, commissioned a mural for the main lobby of the North Central Bronx Hospital by the artist Helen Frankenthaler. She created a mural that would be both life-affirming and durable for the unpredictable environment of a large city hospital. The expansive ceramic tile mural was conserved in 1984 and sparked a comprehensive conservation/maintenance program for the HHC collection. The mural was executed at Bennington Potters in Vermont.
