Walton High School is named after Mary Walton, the wife of General Lewis Morris, who was a member of the continental congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. During the colonial period, Mary Walton was governess of a school for girls as well as a successful landowner. The Walton School was reorganized into one of the first junior high schools for girls in New York City (April 19, 1923). 126 girls were part of the first graduating class from there on January 27, 1926. In 1932 Alton Junior High School for Girls was relocated to Reservoir Avenue and in 1976 Walton became a coeducational High School.

Today, Walton High School prepares its students for pursuing higher education and to be competitive in today's changing job market. In conjunction with Lehman College, students are able to participate in a pre-teaching program and are offered advanced placement courses.
