Lightning Battle Till The End, Drop Non-Conference Tilt

New York, NY–The Lehman College women’s volleyball team (1-3 Overall, 1-2 CUNYAC) continued to struggle in the early stages of the 2007 season, falling to non-conference opponent College of St. Elizabeth by scores of 30-19, 30-26, and 32-30 Thursday evening in Morristown, NJ.

Slow starts in each set came back to haunt Lehman, as the Eagles put the pressure on the Lightning by building comfortable leads in each individual contest. After Lehman dropped the first two sets, the College of St. Elizabeth held what seemed to be an insurmountable 27-20 lead in the third set. From there, the gritty Lightning refused to go down quietly, recording 10 of the set’s next 12 points to take a 30-29 lead thanks to the sensational effort of senior outside hitter Yohanna Sufran who finished the evening with 12 kills and 12 digs, both team-highs. A point away from forcing a fourth set, the Lightning would fail to score throughout the remainder of the set, as the Eagles scored three consecutive points to take the set and the match.

Despite the defeat, freshman setter Jillian Acevedo chipped in with a solid performance, recording a team-high 14 assists to go along with four service aces, three digs, and two kills. Freshman outside hitter Crisset Maxwell tallied three kills and seven digs, and the Lightning as a team recorded 13 service aces.

The Lightning will hope to get on the winning track this Saturday afternoon as they travel to Wayne, NJ to compete in a multi-match against non-conference opponents William Paterson University and USMMA.
