Note takers are recruited and paid by the office. Before notetakers are allowed into the classroom to take notes they are required to PRESENT A PORTFOLIO OF WRITTEN EVIDENCE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE APPLICANT MEETS THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION. index Access and Technology Center (Library 215) The Assistive Technology Center (ATC) is located in the Leonard Lief library, room 215. The ATC is equipped with 5 state of the art computers, 24 inch flat panel monitors, flatbed scanners, a laser printer and a Braille embosser. All computers are outfitted with a variety of assistive software programs designed specifically to accommodate students with learning and or physical disabilities. Dragon Naturally Speaking - allows students with learning and or physical disabilities to create documents by simply dictating their work to the computer. Used with standard computer programs like word processors to create documents. JAWS – A screen reader designed for persons who are blind or visually impaired who are unable to read the information displayed on a computer screen. The JAWS software describes the text, menus, buttons and other items that appear on the screen in an easy to understand human-like voice. JAWS can be used to access many of the programs used by college students, including word processors, spreadsheets and web browsers. Kurzweil 3000 - Kurzweil 3000 is a comprehensive reading, writing and learning software solution for individuals with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder or those who are English Language Learners. Kurzweil 1000 - This software enables readers to scan most printed materials (ie: books, articles) into digital files which the user can later edit or listen to by using the built in screen reading capability of Kurzweil 1000. ZoomText – A screen enlarging software which allows persons with visual impairments to magnify or otherwise modify the image on the computer screen thereby allowing an easier to view image. Zoomtext can also provide screen reading capability which supplements the visual information being displayed on the screen. Read & Write Gold - students and educators can mark main ideas, extract outlines, create voice notes and add annotations. Integrated reference tools include dictionary, synonyms, syllables, audible spell checking, along with word prediction, to facilitate both reading and writing improvement and assistance. WinBraille – Used in conjunctioin with a Braille embosser, converts standard word processing and text documents into printed type 1 or type 2 Braille. Other ATC devices: Adjustable Height Workstations: allows wheelchait users and other with mobility impairments to more readily access computer workstations. Braille printer - allows students who are legally blind/ blind to print documents in Braille. Closed circuit televison: CCTV’s - essentially a video monitor attached to a video camera, a CCTV allows persons with visual impairments to more readily access printed materials by magnifying the materials Flatbed optical scanners – used to convert printed documents into digital formats and in combination with software allow for conversion into editable form. Large Print keyboards - standard 101 key computer keyboards enhanced with high contrast, large print key characters.

This equipment is available to students who require testing accommodations. index Services for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing Interpreters Students requiring interpreters must provide advanced notice in order to enable SDS to locate qualified interpreters. index Assistive Listening Devices The Assistive Listening Device is for students who are hard of hearing. This type of assistive technology is used in the classroom to enhance the voice of a speaker. The most common ALD is a personal FM amplification system which is available at the office.
