Calculation of GRade Point Average, Part 1:
Each grade has a "quality point value": for example, A is 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0.
Now that we've grouped together all the grades (A grades together, A- grades together, B+ grades together, etc.), we are ready for the next step: figuring out the total number of quality points earned. We do this by multiplying the total credits earned for each grade by that grade's quality point value.
Calculation of Quality Points Earned
QUALITY POINT VALUE |
INDEXABLE CREDITS |
QUALITY POINTS EARNED |
|||
A | 4.0 | x | 5 | = | 20.0 |
A- | 3.7 | x | 7 | = | 25.9 |
B+ | 3.3 | x | 3 | = | 9.9 |
B | 3.0 | x | 6 | = | 18.0 |
B- | 2.7 | x | 9 | = | 24.3 |
C+ | 2.3 | x | 3 | = | 6.9 |
C | 2.0 | x | 3 | = | 6.0 |
C- | 1.7 | x | 5 | = | 8.5 |
D+ | 1.3 | x | 3 | = | 3.9 |
D | 1.0 | x | 0 | = | 0.0 |
F, FIN, WU | 0.0 | x | 4 | = | 0.0 |
TOTAL | 48 | 123.4 |
Calculation of Grade Point Average, Part 2
We then take the sum of quality points earned and divide it by the total number of credits taken by the student.
Divide 123.4 (sum of quality points) by 48 (sum of credits indexed)
123.4 รท 48 = 2.570833
WE'RE DONE! This student's GPA is 2.571 (rounded off)
