We have reserved a block of rooms at the Courtyard New York Manhattan/Upper East Side by Marriott, at an excellent group rate: $169.00 per night plus tax. This rate is available until March 25, 2012. The price is the same for both room types. The block defined by the hotel includes only a small number of rooms with two queen beds and mainly rooms with one queen bed. We are assured, however, that additional rooms with two queen beds will be allowed at this price so long as they remain available at the hotel. Thus, those of you who want a room with two beds should book as early as possible!
The dates included in the group booking are Wednesday, April 18 through Sunday, April 22. The online links given above will not permit reservations outside this window. If you wish to arrive at the hotel earlier or leave later, you should reserve by telephone.
Unless you want to stay in a dorm-style, bare-bones hotel, you really can’t beat Marriott’s rate in NYC. However, graduate students and others on a tight budget might wish to compare Leo House Hotel (332 West 23 Street), an old hotel in Chelsea (212-929-1010); The Gershwin (7 East 27 Street), near the Empire State Building (1-800-741-5072); or the Chelsea Savoy (204 West 23), which advertises a “quad room” with two double beds starting at $155. Of course, these locations are not as convenient to the Museum (Fifth Ave at 82 Street) as the Courtyard Marriott (410 East 92 Street, near First Avenue), but you can investigate reviews and ratings on a site such as www.tripadvisor.com.
ONE LAST NOTE: You will be able to pick up your registration packets at the hotel on Thursday afternoon and subsequently, beginning Friday morning, at the Museum. The entrance to the Museum for registrants will be a small door at street level on Fifth Avenue at 81st Street. If you are planning to arrive on Friday, please be aware that the Museum does not permit suitcases to be brought in, nor to be left in the coat check room.
