Founded in 1968, this New York based architectural firm of 65 professionals has completed over 300 projects, most notably the recent Guggenheim Museum Renovation and Addition; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; Addition to the Busch-Reisinger Museum; and Fine Arts Library at the Fogg Museum at Harvard University.  In the Bronx, their work is represented at Hostos Community College CUNY (Grand Concourse between West 144th and West 149th Streets.) Principle Architect Charles Gwathmey, the son of the painter, Robert Gwathmey, was born in 1938 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and received a Masters of Architecture degree in 1962 from Yale.  Principal Robert Siegel, a native New Yorker, was born in 1939.  He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute and a Masters Degree from Harvard.  Both principals have been professors and lecturers at many of the most esteemed architectural programs in America.  Gwathmey has endowed the Robert Gwathmey Chair in Art and Architecture at Cooper Union. Siegel has organized the Pratt Institute Student Intern Program with the Gathmey Siegel office.  Their buildings “… are characterized by a clarity of design and warmth of materials, combined with a sculptor’s sensitivity to shade and light.  Their bold use of curves and cylinders within rectilinear spaces creates a kind of lyrical rationalism. “  The firm and its principals have received more than 100 awards and honors, including the American Institute of Architect’s highest honor, the Firm Award for“unswerving dedication to design excellence and a strong belief in the collaborative effort.” Gwathmey is one of The New York Five architects (Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, Charles Gwathmey, John Hejduk and Richard Meier) who constituted the New York School and are now among the most influential architects working today.
