Miss Mooney's Class

Alice Kramer Collection

Image of the students in Miss Mooney's PS8 class.

1905

Miss Mooney's fifth grade class at the Old P.S.8 at Mosholu Parkway and Bainbridge Avenue. Gas lights illuminated the classroom.

  Listen to the the story:

"This picture was taken when we had the old building (P.S. 8).

In this picture, I would say that it not only shows the dresses and the costumes and the bows and this and that.

I think they had about 40 or 50 in the classroom. I would say it would be 5A or 5B.

It also shows that in those days, the illumination was by gas jet. I hate to admit I'm in that picture (one that speaks about the age of gas jets!)

The teacher was in the back of the room, and as I remember her, her name was Miss Mooney. And in those days, we certainly had, under her jurisdiction, to pay attention to what she was teaching.

It was very reminiscent of a very wonderful school's existence in the Bronx, on Moshulu Parkway around Bainbridge Avenue. It's a beautiful picture of olden days."
