 Lehman College ESL Program FAQs

Do you offer online or in-person classes?

We offer morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday courses taught online, via Zoom, in-person, and taught at CUNY on the Concourse located at 2501 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10468, or HyFlex. HyFlex modality allows students the choice to attend in person or online from class to class. Hy-Flex classes can be attended online via Zoom or in person at Lehman College campus (Davis Hall), 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468.

Are there any full-time or part-time courses?

Yes. You can attend full-time or part-time courses. Morning and afternoon courses are full-time intensive courses held four times a week (Monday- Thursday), while part-time evening courses run twice a week. If you wish to register for a part-time course, you can choose to attend a Monday/ Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday class.

Do you have weekend classes?

Yes. Those students who are unable to attend weekday classes can join our online Saturday course.

I am an international student. Can I register for your courses?

Yes. The Lehman College ESL Program is legally authorized to enroll non-immigrant alien students. If you have already established and currently maintain F-1 visa status, our team will be happy to discuss the transfer process with you, help you determine the best program start date based on your situation, and modality of attendance to maintain your status. If you are outside the USA or intend to apply for a change of status, we will be able to offer an I-20 for students prepared to attend class in person at our Bronx campuses. Contact us at esl.program@lehman.cuny.edu, and we will be happy to provide you with detailed information on school transfer or F1 visa process.

How many students do you have in your classes?

Our classes are small. For the purpose of maintaining quality instruction, we do not have more than 15 students in each class.

I don’t know English. Do you offer classes for beginners?

Yes. We offer two part-time evening Beginner courses allowing students to attend classes on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays. Students can choose to join classes in person or online.

Are your courses free?

Our courses are not free, but they are affordable, follow a flexible schedule, and are taught by dynamic instructors in a student-oriented environment.

Can I pay for the course in installments?

No.  All course fees need to be paid at the time of registration. Unfortunately, payment plans are not available.

Is there a registration fee?

Yes. There is a $25 registration fee per semester. For example, if you attend our courses during both Fall A and B semesters, you will pay a $25 registration fee only once.

Can I receive a certificate at the end of the course?

Yes. Eligible students will earn a certificate of completion at the end of their program provided they maintain good attendance (70-80%) and actively participate throughout the course (via class discussion, completion of homework, and coming prepared to class).

Will I get college credits for attending your courses?

No. Our ESL Program offers non-credit courses, however, we provide the students with opportunities to improve their English skills to find a job, succeed in their career, or enter degree or certificate programs.

How do I register for your English courses?

Once you have decided on the course, click on the green button “Add to Cart” under the course description. Since we offer multiple courses, please pay attention to the name and dates of the course you wish to attend. New users will need to create an account. Registration has to be completed in one sitting, as partially completed registration cannot be saved for a future session. You will receive information about a placement test after you have registered and paid for the course.

I live in another state/ country. Can I register for your online courses?

Of course! We welcome learners from all over the world.

I would like to check my English level to know which of your courses is best for me. Can I take the English language test? Is it free?

Yes. The Lehman College ESL Program uses the Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT) to place students in sections of similar ability. The OOPT is an online, multiple-choice exam that tests ability in grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening. It takes around one hour to complete. Your speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills are verified by our instructors, and if necessary, placement is adjusted. After registration, you will be sent a link to the test, which can be taken from any computer (sound required). The price of the test is included in the course fee. You can check your English level at no cost.
