Course Design Institute

Description: The course design institute is a structured path for Lehman faculty to develop, revise and build model courses. The course is meant to be an exemplary course shell and may be used by the developing faculty, as well as other faculty within the department. Faculty will need to complete a series of steps over the course of 12 weeks to revise and build the course, dedicating 2 to 4 hours weekly to complete the steps. With the support of instructional designers, faculty will have the support necessary to design and revise to meet OSCQR standards. As part of the process, courses will be designed and reviewed, the OSCQR rubric .

We invite faculty to submit an application for the Course Design Institute(CDI): Course Development and Revision to develop and/or revise a fully online exemplary course. The CDI is offered 2-3 times each year. Email notifications will be sent when the Office of Online Education will be conducting their next cohort. However, you may apply anytime throughout the year. Once the next cohort is open we will send communication to you.

Please Note: Courses will need to be approved by the faculty Chair before the Office of Online Education can move forward with the application.

Institute Objectives

By the end of the institute you should have completed the follow:

    1. Outline the framework of an online course, utilizing backwards design principles, within the Course Planning Document.
    2. Construct a model course (based on outline) leveraging the Lehman Online Course Template.
    3. Collaborate to develop, revise, and maintain a student-centered approach to course design and build.

  • OSCQR Rubric: In the Spring of 2022, Lehman College adopted the OSCQR Rubric as a tool to help faculty assess their online classes. The OSCQR Rubric was created by SUNY and contains 50 standards, across 6 sections. The standards have been designed to ensure that online courses are meeting the same quality measures across institutions.
