SCOPE OF WORK

Goal 5: Engage in academic and outreach activities that identify Lehman College as the leading institution serving the educational, professional, cultural and recreational needs of the Bronx and surrounding region.

5.1 Establish relationships with departments, certifying agencies, and Division of Adult and Continuing Ed (CE) to define programming objectives and to implement a model of revenue sharing. In 2005-6 CE will distribute over $100,000 to departments in the Divisions of Natural and Social Sciences and Education.
5.2 Increase continuing education activities and opportunities to meet the educational and cultural needs for the region.
CE: P&B Subcommittee ongoing Committee to meet and develop recommendations. New targeted certificate programs developed in Health. CE offered the following categories of credit and non-credit certificate programs in various health-related areas: Certificates for Direct Care Workers (for credit, career ladder); Continuing Education for Healthcare Workers, Non-clinical (non-credit); Nursing courses (for credit, career ladder); Pre-Nursing courses (for credit, career ladder). In Spring, 2006, it will offer in conjunction with Kingsborough Community College (KCC) a credit/non-credit certificate program in Hospitality and Tourism.
5.3 Based upon needs assessments, develop and implement a marketing plan that promotes programs and offerings. CE; P&B Subcommittee ongoing Develop marketing plan for Continuing Education and CUNY on the Concourse (COTC). Design a new brochure that consolidates CE and COTC offerings. Do a targeted mailing based on demographic survey of enrollment patterns. Fall 2005 and Spring, 2006 C.E. registrations increased by 10%.
5.4 Establish relationships with external entities. CE; P&B Subcommittee Ongoing Through grants and contracts expand programs involving area health centers, unions and city agencies. New programs developed with 1199 ETJSP, HHC, Montefiore Medical Center, Jacobi, DSBS, HRA, Social Security Administration. Began offering the Immigrant Nurse Program and the MD to RN Program for 1199 and Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC); an HR training program for Montefiore, a Workforce 1 Job Center for DSBS; a skills training program for Human Resources Administration (HRA), a job placement and training program for the Developmentally Disabled for the Social Security Administration, and a COPC funded Community Outreach Partnership Center. In addition, we are now represented on the Fordham Business Improvement District (BID).
5.5 Bolster CE’s visibility and role within the College through Media Relations, the website, and other means. CE; P&B Subcommittee Ongoing Improve CE and CUNY on the Concourse websites. Introducing the College and the Community to the diversity of CE offerings from CE, COTC, and Adult Degree Program (ADP). Completed the 2005-06 CE website and working on the 2006-07 revision.
5.6 Supplement the administrative infrastructure to facilitate and support increased CE offerings. CE; P&B Subcommittee 2006-2007 Work with Nursing department to create a Nursing Continuing Education Program that will be housed in CE. Increased opportunities for training and upgrading of nurses; increased revenue for Nursing Department and the College. Supporting four support lines within Nursing; supporting development and implementation of online Nursing courses and programs.
5.7 Strengthen and enhance the basic education, workforce preparation and professional skills of adults. CE and CUNY on the Concourse 2006-2007 Work with SBS, SBDC, and DOL to identify job opportunities in the Bronx. To provide better job opportunities for the population of the Bronx. DSBS has provided three years of funding, 3.9 million dollars, to begin a Workforce 1 Job Assist Center at COTC. Workforce Center opened on October 1. In Spring, 2006, Lehman is beginning a collaboration with Kingsborough CC to offer a tourism and hospitality program at COTC.
5.8 Strengthen the College’s role in the K-16 educational reform. S. Hoeltzel A. Digby, A. Rothstein, P. Baez, S. Lerner 2006-2007 Work with the Bronx High School for the Visual Arts. Lehman College Art Gallery to provide sevices to students and professional development for teachers. A grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services will support this activity for three more years.

To enhance communication among all partners: to engage in programmatic review to ensure alignment with needs of K-12 schools. The undergraduate certification sequence in Middle and High School Education has been revised to include an emphasis on teaching in small school settings.

A letter of intent for a new Educational Leadership program has been submitted.

5.9 Establish relationships with NYCDOE, NYSED, certifying and accrediting agencies to define programming objectives and assure compliance Division of Education Office Ongoing Review city and state documents, review student applications, update materials, participate in certification workshops and accreditation seminars. Lehman College programs meet state, city and national standards and provides personnel that meets the needs of NYC educational system Holds NCATE accreditation, preparing for follow-up visit in Spring 2007; all programs are registered and approved by NYSED, successful fellows program with NYCDOE.
5.10 Based on student, alumni and partner feedback and surveys develop and implement approaches to promote programs and offerings Division of Education, Center for School/College Collaboratives, College Now, Bronx Institute, and Institute for Literary Studies Ongoing Survey design, data collection, analysis and distribution to appropriate internal individuals and departments. 5.11 Establish relationships with external agencies that work with Bronx schools Division of Education, Center for S/CCm College Now, BxI, ILS, S. Lerner Ongoing Seek additional grant funding to enhance relationships and scope of work. Strategies of engagement provide opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate with other formal and informal institutions. Partnerships with New Visions, Inwood House, Cultural Institutions, Bronx Zoo have been formed.

5.13 Supplement the administrative and space infrastructure to facilitate increased educational outreach offerings Space Committee, Department Chairs, Division of Education By Summer 2006 Increase online courses, secure space for collaborative programs with teachers and students. To utilize various delivery systems, including technology. The Division of Education offers a wide selection of online or hybrid courses with the intent to add additional ones in 2006-2007.
5.14 Continue to search and apply for grant funding to increase collaborative activities to meet and support needs of the educational community and the college. Center for S/CC, College Now, ILS, BxI Ongoing Maintain grant funding for existing programs, identify new initiatives, find additional funding for continuing programs, replicate successful program at additional sites. Affiliated Small Schools Network, PDS, Divisional Council, NCATE partnership guidelines. Increase in student preparation for and aspiration to college, increase in retention and completion of high school and college in timely fashion. Grant activities ongoing; monthly deadlines, increased search for foundation and corporate support.
5.15 Strengthen and enhance the preparation of teachers and the readiness of students for entry to higher education LA/S and Education Departments, ILS Ongoing Field work, student teaching, internships, teaching fellows, Professional Development Lecture Series, PDS annual conference. Provide opportunities, through on-campus programs, for students to meet requirements of high school regents diploma. Work with small schools and ASSN. Status of Lehman College Education Division in region, disseminate information about Lehman programs, increase word of mouth in community, among students and among teachers and staff. Two events in lecture series scheduled for 2005-2006, PDS conference held in Fall 2005. Continued work with 9 small schools affiliated with Lehman College.
5.16 Expand and increase awareness of Lehman's cultural and recreational programs and events. Susan Hoeltzel. Martin Zwiren, and Eva Bornstein 2005-2006 Maintain websites on cultural and recreational events. Send press releases to periodicals and community newspapers. Create a separate publication via Media Relations highlighting cultural events at the College. Expand public participation in cultural and recreational events at the College. The PAC has begun a new marketing campaign to increase awareness of the Center. Lehman Stages has just completed a very successful run of events. The Lehman Art Gallery's educational project, Public Art in the Bronx, is used extensively by Bronx public schools. A companion website on Bronx Architecture is being developed with funding from NEH. The APEX is presently running at maximum capacity, serving 700 Lehman students per day and over 300 faculty, staff, alumni and community per week. This does not include rentals and varsity team activities.
5.17 Expand Lehman's role in economic development. SBDC, COC, HUD/HSIAC Project

Deans' Council

2006-2007 Organize small businesses in Bronx neighborhoods.

 

 

To assist in making small businesses economically viable.

HUD/HSIAC, SBDC, BOEDC and the Clinton Foundation have undertaken a series of initiatives to show small business how to work together in neighborhood based collaborations in order to share costs, bolster marketing, and help with financial planning.

SBDC offers technical assistance, consulting and advising to over 760 small businesses in the Bronx per year. It has also helped these businesses to get over seven million dollars in loans.

      Match job orders and job seekers through the Workforce 1 Center. The Workforce 1 Center has a target of 1560 job placements for 2006-07. The Workforce 1 Center has 400 job placements as of Feb 1 and is on target to meet its goal.
      Work with the Office of Student Affairs and the Academic departments on job preparation skills and internships in the College curriculum. To make Lehman students both aware of and prepared for work experience. The Deans' Council will meet with Vice President Magdaleno to discuss how to make workforce education a part of the College curriculum.
5.18 Connect the intellectual resources of the College to issues of concern to the community. Strategic Planning Committee for Goal 5 and College Relations 2006-2007 Bring together the Goal 5 Planning Committee and Media Relations to discuss the most effective ways of linking the College, with its many outreach activities, to the community. The creation of an Outreach publication and a community bulletin board that will announce College-based events to the community. The Goal 5 Planning Committee will meet with Media Relations in Spring, 2006.
