Science Tutoring & Workshops

What We Do

Since 1995, the Science Learning Center (SLC) has provided tutoring and additional academic support for students pursuing science and math coursework at Lehman. The SLC is committed to the following goals:

  • hiring and training highly qualified tutors,
  • providing workshops which target student academic needs,
  • fostering a positive, motivating atmosphere for student learning, and
  • promoting students' acquisition of knowledge and critical thinking, independent learning and study skills.

Location, Hours & Semester Schedule

The Science Learning Center is located in Gillet Hall, room 133. During the spring and fall semsesters the SLC is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Center is not open for tutoring when classes are not in session and when the College is closed. It may, however, be open for scheduled workshops. Please call the Center at 718-960-7707 to confirm workshop hours. Please also call the Center (718-960-7707) for information about whether summer session 1 tutoirng is available and hours during which the Center may be open.

For BASIC MATH tutoring (including CUNY Assessment in Mathematics prep) and for information about the Math Lab's hours, please go to the Mathematics Department's Math and Computer Science Learning Center in Gillet Hall, Room 222. The Math Lab may be reached by phone at 718-960-8878.

*Note that the Science Learning Center does not offer tutoring in math. All math tutoring and workshops are offered through the Math and Computer Science Science Learning Center.

Science Learning Center Workshops (Biology and Chemistry Course Review Workshops) for Spring 2016

The SLC will offer review workshops for the courses listed below. Workshops will be conducted two weeks prior to exams. Workshop facilitators will review lecture material, answer questions, and provide additional resources to supplement course content. Students should prepare for each workshops by reading ahead, developing questions, and arriving with their textbooks. Times and locations to be announced. Please check your email or call the SLC for more information.

Essentials of General Chemistry: For students taking CHEM 114
Essentials of Organic Chemistry: For students taking CHEM 120
Anatomy and Physiology II: For students taking BIO 182

Peer-led Team Learning (PLTL) Workshops for Spring  2016

PLTL workshops will be conducted each week, and are course- and instructor-specific. PLTL workshops are offered in some sections of Biology and Physics courses as well. Times and locations TBA. Please check your email, Blackboard, or call the SLC (718-860-7707) for more information.

Come by the SLC in Gillet Hall, room 133, any time during our regular hours to apply for tutoring. Please note tutoring is not offered when the College is closed or during the summer and winter intersession. It may, however, be open for scheduled workshops.   • Online Tutoring in: BIO 182; CHE 114, 120, 166, 168, 232; and PHY 166

Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Research Program

Funding for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors interested in research is available through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Research Program (LSAMP). If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have a GPA of 3.0 or better, and are African American or of African descent, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, or Native Pacific Islander, you may be eligible to receive up to $10,000 for the academic year.
