The GEAR UP Summer College Boot Camp will provide participants who will be entering their freshman year of college in the fall of 2013 with an opportunity to participate in a program designed to prepare students for a successful freshman year in college. As part of the program, students will create a college survival guide relating to the college they will attend in the fall and serve as mentors for BGU rising 12th grade students participating in our Summer Institute. Students will also participate in educational field trips during the program. The location of the trips will be announced on the first day of the program.
Some of the topics that will be discussed in class and used in creating the guides are listed below.

- College Life: Clubs / Athletics

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Laptop computer. Lunch (at Fordham University) will be provided by The Bronx Institute.

The GEAR UP Summer Institute will provide students with an opportunity to get a head start preparing for college. Students will participate in a comprehensive college preparation program. The morning sessions consist of ACT preparatory classes for rising seniors. These classes will help support students achieve and maintain a successful high school career and perform well on standardized college entrance exams. The afternoon sessions will consist of classes designed to begin the development of a student’s college portfolio using a computer and an iPad.
Bronx GEAR UP (rising 12th graders) students will complete the following items as part of their college portfolio:
- 3 college applications completed but not submitted (CUNY / SUNY and Common)
- College list (Reach / Target / Safety)
- Draft college essay, recommendation request letters, resume
- Draft FAFSA form
- Two scholarship applications
Students who successfully complete the program and have not already received an iPad from the Bronx Institute will receive an iPad at a ceremony in September. All students will be eligible to receive 1 high school elective credit (at the discretion of their school principal). Lunch (at Fordham University) will be provided by The Bronx Institute.

The Bronx Institute Wildlife Career Ladder program provides highly motivated, academically advanced students, who have a sincere interest in conservation issues, the opportunity to be part of a rigorous program that includes both classroom and hands-on experiential learning at the Wildlife Conservation Society (The Bronx Zoo). Students who participate will be provided with opportunities that will prepare them to understand and become potential leaders in the areas of wildlife and environmental conservation.
If selected to participate in The Bronx Institute Wildlife Career Ladder program, juniors will take part in a program that consists of three phases from March to June and will receive a $300 stipend upon successful completion of the program. Seniors will also take part in a three phase program that includes a summer internship component from March to August and will receive a $600 stipend upon successful completion of the program. Students must be available to attend all sessions. Students who do not complete all class and work assignments and who have more than 3 excused absences and more than 1 unexcused absence will not be eligible for the stipend. The sessions will meet on selected weekdays after school and on occasional Saturdays. A full calendar will be available upon acceptance.
Schedule:
Program begins on March 27, 2013 from 10:30am-5:30pm and will continue on March 28th from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. Beginning again Tuesday, April 2nd and then continuing every Tuesday and Thursday, 4:00pm – 6:30pm until May 2nd including the following Saturdays, April 6, April 13, and April 20th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM , Saturday, April 27 and May 4 from 10:00 – 3:00pm Saturday. Internship work as Junior Interpreters starts on May 18thor Saturday, June 1st, Saturday, June 15thor Saturday, June 22nd, Wednesday, July 10th or Thursday July 11th, Wednesday, July 17th or Thursday, July 18th, Wednesday, July 24th or Thursday, July 24th, Wednesday, July 31st or Thursday, August 1st. Each day will run from 9:00am – 4:00pm. Students will work in two groups, one group working every other Saturday and on Wednesdays or Thursdays. No work: Saturday, May 11th, May 25th, June 8th, June 29th, and the week of July 4th

The Bronx Institute GEAR UP and New York Botanical Garden Internship Program is a rigorous science program where students commit to take part in workshops and service hours that focus on the experiences of working with plants in both indoor and outdoor environments. Students will get an inside, up-close, and hands-on experience in plant sciences, how the Garden operates, and the wide range of career opportunities that can be found in a botanical garden setting. Through hands-on, investigative activities and projects, students will explore three key components of the Garden: Education, Science, and Horticulture.

The Bronx Institute is happy to announce its continuing partnership with the Harvard University, Brown University, and Columbia University Summer Pre-College Programs. These programs give high school students the opportunity to take college classes at Ivy League Universities during the summer. Students will have the opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty and explore their academic areas of interest. This opportunity is only open to juniors with a cumulative average of 90 or higher.
Harvard University – 8 Week Residential Program, June 22, 2013 – August 10, 2013
Students will dorm at Harvard for two months and take up to 2 college classes for college credit.
Brown University – 3 Week Residential Program, July 22, 2013 – August 9, 2013
Students will dorm at Brown for three weeks and take a non-credit college class.
Columbia University – 3 Week Commuter Program, June 24, 2013 – July 12, 2013
Students will commute to Columbia University and take a non-credit college class.

The GEAR UP Saturday Academy will provide students with test preparation to increase their chances of getting admitted to the college of their choice. For GEAR UP juniors, the spring semester will prepare students for the May 2013 SAT Exam. For GEAR UP seniors, the spring semester will prepare students for the CUNY Assessment Exam.
Students who are not currently registered in the fall semester will not be eligible for the iPad as it is not a part of the spring curriculum.

The GEAR UP Saturday Academy will provide students with skill building and test preparation to increase their chances of getting admitted to the college of their choice. For GEAR UP juniors, the fall semester will consist of an intensive writing program that focuses on the completion of the writing section of the common application with particular emphasis on the college essay. The spring semester will prepare students for the May 2013 SAT exam. For GEAR UP seniors, the fall semester will consist of classes designed to finalize their college portfolio. The spring semester will prepare students for the CUNY Assessment Exam.
