For painter Candida Alvarez, stained glass is associated with contemplative and religious spaces. She has designed three tiers of stained glass windows for the atrium of I.S. 206. The windows are on a north-south axis.

Intrigued by the brilliance of the medium Alvarez has

created a greater range of hues by layering the glass in the lead slots. Each piece of glass is hand painted. In some the brushwork is visible, others have the hatching scratched into them. The imagery of the windows relates to the curriculum studied by the junior high students who use the building. More about the Percent for Art Program

The third floor window relates to biology and depict abstracted
images of the lungs, digestive system, brain and heart

The fifth floor window relates to environmental science.
It includes images of leaves found on city trees,
the ailanthus, red maple, sweet gum, and white oak
